Windows 8 Preview

Just as we're all getting comfortable with Windows 7, Microsoft has announced its next operating system, Windows 8, which is expected to be released in Fall 2012.

The major point to make about Windows 8 is that Microsoft has designed it to work much like a SmartPhone or tablet, with touch-screen functionality replacing the mouse and keyboard. You can still use a mouse and keyboard, but Microsoft has designed this operating system to work with touch-screen devices.

The idea is for the user to have the same interface across multiple devices, from the desktop/laptop to the cell phone to the tablet, and to be able to use all of the same applications and functions from one device to the next.

Rather than the traditional desktop with icons spread across the screen that you click on, Windows 8 uses a cell phone/tablet interface with tiles that you touch to open programs, folders and files. If you have a SmartPhone or tablet, you'll be very familiar with this style of computing. It also makes use of a tablet-style on-screen keyboard.

Compatability-wise, Microsoft says everything that runs on Windows 7 will run on Windows 8. Resource-wise, Microsoft says Windows 8 will use about 33 percent less memory than Windows 7.

It also provides more seamless integration of applications so you don't have to leave one application to put information from it into another application. And, for the spelling-challenged, it has spell-checking throughout the entire system.

Healthcare Information Online

Healthcare IT, Electronic Medical Records and Electronic Health records are rapidly changing the way doctors provide patient care.

But what does this mean for you, the patient?

From SmartPhone apps like iTriage that provide information on health symptoms, diseases, medications and procedures to patient portals provided by doctors that allow patients to log in to schedule/cancel appointments, request medical records, etc., healthcare is moving rapidly to a patient-centric model that gives patients more control over their healthcare.

Following are a few sites that you might find useful in helping you take control of your own healthcare:

* HealthIT.gov -- the Patients & Families section helps you take control over your family's healthcare

* Requesting your Personal Health Information -- Steps to take to request your PHI from your doctors.

* Health.Data.Gov -- Search health data by category or keyword.

* Healthfinder.gov -- Personal health tools, calculators, health news, videos, podcasts.

* Health on the Net Foundation -- This link takes you to the organization's search engine of medical web sites that it has certified as providing reliable medical information.

* Flu Finder -- Find flu vaccination locations near you.
BizTech -- Sales Help Online

If your company finds it difficult to track and measure its sales activities, you may want to consider a cloud-based Customer Relationship Management (CRM) program to help manage your sales pipeline.

For a monthly fee, these Internet programs can improve sales pipeline management, lead management, sales forecasting and reporting. Generally, they'll help your salespeople keep better track of the sales process.

The most well-known of these online applications is SalesForce, which pioneered the cloud-based CRM model. SalesForce.com charges $15 per user per month on up to $250 per user per month depending on the features you need.

Others in this space include PipelineDeals ($15 per user per month), LandslideCRM ($29-$79 a month), SalesBoom ($45 a month), SugarCRM ($360 per user per year), and FreeCRM (Free).

The basic options of these applications include Account, Lead and Contact lists, Tasks, Notes, Event and Opportunity tracking, and basic Reports.

The more expensive options might include customizable Dashboards for quick snapshots of your sales activities, sales process tracking, bulk email campaigns, customizable reports, and integration with programs like Outlook and Quickbooks.

A unique feature of Landslide, available under its $79 per user per month plan, is the assignment of a VIP Sales Assistant, who enters your sales data for you to save you the headaches of time-consuming data entry. It also provides an extensive sales blog at http://www.eyesonsales.com.

We thank you for your past business and hope we can continue to fulfill your technology needs in the future. If you have any questions about current technology issues, feel free to contact us at 537-4198.
Sincerely,
Eric Magill
