Windows 7 Launches October 22
Windows 7
Much of the computer world is abuzz in anticipation of the release of Microsoft's "Vista-fixer", the Windows 7 operating system.

Generally, I'm offering this advice:
* If you're having problems with Vista, you can make plans to upgrade to Windows 7 starting Oct. 22.
* If Vista is working fine, wait a bit to see if any problems have been discovered between Windows 7 and the programs you use regularly.
* If you have Windows XP, chances are you'll need to upgrade your system to run Windows 7 -- you'll have to weigh the pros and cons of upgrading your current system or buying a new one with Windows 7 already on it.
* It appears that initially, new computers with Windows 7 will be more expensive than computers now selling with Vista. That may change around Thanksgiving as computer manufacturers and retailers gear up for the holiday season with special deals on Windows 7 models.

A couple of independent reviews of Windows 7 can be found at the following links:

If you'd like to upgrade to Windows 7, call us at 537-4198 for a free consultation. If Windows 7 is a good fit, you can then use the Coupon at the bottom of this newsletter to get a 15% discount off our regular rates to install Windows 7 on your computer (average install about 2 hours).
Acer Passes Dell Worldwide
AcerMany of you have had questions about the Acer line of computers because you hadn't heard of the Acer brand before. While Acer doesn't advertise like more well-known brands such as Dell and HP, the Taiwan company has just surpassed Dell as the second largest computer manufacturer in the world. You can read more about this shakeup in the PC industry here. If you'd like to learn more about Acer laptops, we can get them for you starting at $775*, including setup, transfer of all applications, peripherals and files, and a one-year warranty and service contract (including tips, advice and minor training for a full year!).
* Through Oct. 31, 2009 -- Terms are 75% down, with balance of 25% due upon satisfactory installation
BizTech Talk -- Acceptable Use Policy
If you're a business owner with employees, you know they're prone to using the Internet at work for personal business. While this can be a nice perk, it can also create problems for your company.

To alleviate the risks associated with employees' personal use, from lost productivity to viruses and hackers that could compromise your company's and your customers' sensitive data, you should develop an Acceptable Use Policy detailing what employees can and can't do on your office network.

For instance, you may want to allow employees to check their personal email at work but provide strict guidelines for such use (i.e., they can not open any file attachments at all). You may also want to prevent them from visiting social networking sites that are prone to virus infections (i.e., MySpace).

The policy will not only reduce the risk of infections or other disasters on your network, it could also protect you legally. Without such a policy, you may not win in court if an employee terminated for causing a disaster on your network claimed they were never told they couldn't use the network for personal use.

For help developing such a policy, you can call Eric Magill at 537-4198.
We thank you for your past business and hope we can continue to fulfill your technology needs in the future. If you have any questions about current technology issues, feel free to contact us at 537-4198.
Sincerely,
Eric Magill
