Hello all,
It's been a long but enjoyable May, and I've missed putting The ZIED GUIDE together! Hope you're all doing well, and that you had a restful and enjoyable long holiday weekend. We spent some time out in beautiful East Hampton and now it's back to the grind, as our boys finish school (and for our 6th grader, final exams) & get ready for Summer. This week's newsletter is jam packed with information on topics including sodium, how your work can sabotage (or support) healthy habits, detox diets, kids and body weight, and more. Please read on for my interview, video, and other tips as well as a guest post to keep you fit, healthy and happy.
Until next time, |
Be Smart About Sodium Did you know that it's close to impossible to eat a restaurant meal without going overboard in terms of sodium? Here are some of my tips (and some restaurant meal suggestions) from Bites on Today (a Today show blog) to help you slash sodium the next time you dine out. Do Detox Diets Deliver? Here's my recent caloriecount.com post about my friend and colleague Christine Gerbstadt's new book. What's your opinion? Would love to hear your thoughts about Christine's definition of 'detox diets.' I like it! Kid's Corner Is your child overweight? Here are some expert tips (including one from me) from Woman's Day (June 2011 issue) to find out if your child's body mass index is too high & how to help him or her eat more healthfully. Breakfast in the Classroom. I had the pleasure of delivering the keynote address at a forum in Harlem, promoting Breakfast in the Classroom. Here's a guest post about the program by Gary Kwo (a dietetic intern who worked with me last week). And here's a NY1 segment we did about the program.

June Fitness Challenge (& May Update)
My fitness goal for each week in May was to do #202060: 20 miles of walking, 20 minutes of jumping rope, and 60 minutes of weight training. I accomplished my walking goals (walking is my favorite part!), and met my jumping rope goals (though one week I waited til the last minute and had to do 17 minutes of jumping rope--1000 jumps--on a Sunday! Where I fell short (to my surprise) was in the weight training. I met the 60 minute weekly goal during 2 of the 4 weeks, and only did 40 (better than none!) because I failed to plan precisely when I would get it done. And as you know, sometimes life gets in the way! But no excuses- I'm not going to get down about this. I'll just try to do better next time!
In honor of May's #202060, I donated $200 in honor of my good friend Irene Kolodny in honor of all the work she and her family does to support the PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) Foundation.
To learn more about this and give your own donation, go here.
For June, my goal is to walk 20 miles per week (and run at least 2 of those
20 miles), do 20 minutes of abdominal exercises, and do 40 minutes of upper/lower
body strength training. I hope you'll join me!!! On Twitter and Facebook, I'll use the
hashtag #202040. After I've met my goals, I'll make a donation to the Weekly Fitness
Challenge, an initiative designed to encourage and motivate sedentary Americans to get
more active. The initiative kicks off in mid-August. To learn more, go here.
