Hello all,
Hope you had a fantastic week! Are you all seeing red? That's because February is National Heart Month. In honor of that (and because Valentine's Day--one of my favorite holidays--is just around the corner), this week's newsletter is devoted to helping you keep your heart healthy and strong. You'll find my latest MSNBC column that discusses the brand new Dietary Guidelines for Americans (and why it's important to hold the salt), and find expert tips on how to use food to fight high cholesterol. Finally, please check out this delicious recipe with a RED FOOD from Aviva Goldfarb that's sure to please--if you make it and take a photo of it, I'll be happy to post it on The ZIED GUIDE blog, so please share it with us all!
Enjoy,

Hold the Salt! New Food Rules Lower Sodium Limits
Here's my take on the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans from my latest MSNBC column. While they call for lowering sodium in the American diet, the change in and of itself is no different from the recommendations given in the last version of the guidelines created in 2005. But what has changed, and what will continue to change, is the way products are made in the U.S.--an array of lower sodium food options are being unveiled to help Americans slash the salt without sacrificing taste and convenience. So stay tuned!
Superfoods to Lower Cholesterol
Do you get your total, HDL (good) and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels checked every 5 years? That's the American Heart Association Recommendation for adults aged 20 and older. Having unhealthy blood cholesterol levels can contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease. Although many variables affect a person's blood cholesterol levels, diet can play an important role in controlling your numbers and protecting your heart. Consuming more of these healthful foods may be an important step to help you improve your blood cholesterol numbers, and that can protect you and your heart against cardiovascular disease.
