Greetings!
Whether you're a new or seasoned subscriber to the ZIED GUIDE ™, or this is the first one you're receiving, chances are you'll find something to chew on in this supersized issue. You'll find out whether having a mid life muscle crisis is really inevitable (and what you can do to prevent it), learn why yo-yo dieting is a no no, and get the skinny on the most ridiculous diets of 2010--and believe me, there are too many to count! As always, feel free to pass The ZIED GUIDE™ on to others; if you received this from someone else, you can sign up for your own copy at www.elisazied.com (on the right side of the home page). The ZIED GUIDE™ will be off during winter break, and back the week of January 3rd (though I hope you'll continue to follow my posts on Facebook and Twitter until then). I'd like to leave you with my one wish for you in the new year--to take some time each and every day, no matter how busy you get, to care for yourself, savor the moments, and make the most out of your life. We're only given one shot, so take it--and you just might make it!!

Can You Prevent a Midlife Muscle Crisis?
If you're like me, you're trying to do all you can to use it (so you don't lose it). The good news is, whether you've been sidelined by injury like me, or have yet to start any kind of strength training, it is possible to become more fit and strong even as you get older. I spoke with the fabulous Vonda Wright, an orthopedic surgeon and co-author (with Ruth Winter, MS, my former collaborator) of Fitness After 40 (a book I was honored to endorse). Check out my interview with Wright on caloriecount.com.

The Most Ridiculous Diets of 2010
Read this Dietsinreview.com article to see a recap of the silliest diets of 2010; and remember-- a diet is not something you start and stop, and go on and off of..it's the pattern of eating and drinking you follow for life that helps you get all the nutrients and energy you need to promote optimal health. Please keep that in mind before you're lured by the hot diets of years past or those sure to emerge in 2011 and beyond.
Great News!
I'm so proud to announce that my very first review article, co-authored by the wonderful Dave Grotto and published in the peer-reviewed journal Nutrition in Clinical Practice, was just published in the December 2010 issue. The Standard American Diet and Its Relationship to Health Status, available from the publisher, summarizes how eating patterns have changed over the last few decades, and provides an overview of current efforts (including menu labeling and salt reduction) to reverse the unhealthy trends that characterize eating in America. For a complimentary copy to use in an upcoming article, blog, tv segment or video, please email me at elisa@elisazied.com or Dave Grotto at davegrotto@comcast.net.
