Kid's Skipping Meals, Snacking More
American Dietetic Association

Greetings!

On Tuesday, I returned from the annual American Dietetic Association Food and Nutrition Conference (FNCE) in breezy Boston. I had a wonderful time hearing about cutting edge research and seeing so many amazing friends and colleagues (and even making a few new ones)! Of course I'll share many of the things I learned there (and will continue to learn) to help you all eat more healthfully and mindfully (and of course, enjoyably) in upcoming articles, blogs, and videos.

In this week's newsletter, you'll learn if your snack is more like a meal; why Happy Meals are not so happy (at least in San Francisco); and if a junk food diet is really the way to go to lose weight and stay healthy. You'll also find some great side-dish ideas to make Thanksgiving even more delicious (and healthful too!). Finally, you'll find a link to a recent survey about how kids eat and you'll learn about a brand new website to help families get healthful foods on the table and in the mouths of their babes (whether they're infants or teens).

As always, if you enjoy reading the Zied Guide, please pass it on to a friend, colleague, or family member. I truly appreciate the support and am always open to ideas and suggestions to make it even better, so do share! You know where to find me:)

Does Your Snack Eat Like a Meal?

If you're like most Americans, you snack at least once, twice, or maybe even three times a day. But sometimes a small snack can pack in as many calories (not to mention too much fat, sugar, and sodium) as an actual meal. I was recently interviewed to give my two cents on the latest findings about how Americans' snack. Check out the TV clip here. (WARNING: if you blink, you might miss my son Eli's cameo)!

Sad News: Happy Meal Ban Won't Stop Kid Obesity

Here's my recent msnbc.com column on the decision by San Francisco city officials to crack down on restaurant meals that include free toys unless they meet particular nutritional guidelines. Do you think it's going to make a dent in childhood obesity, or do you see it as an example of the government trying to dictate what we eat?

Twinkie Diet: A Dream Come True?

Check out this article by fellow GALTimer Elizabeth Paige in which I share my thoughts about a nutrition professor's quest to and success in losing weight with Twinkies (not to mention other fatty, sugary treats) in hand.
