Proud Contributor on GalTime.comWhy it's Not Good to OD on
Healthy Snacks

If you're like most Americans, you
snack at least 2 or 3 times a day. But even if you choose healthful snacks, you may get yourself into some trouble in terms of calories.

Here's my one minute GALTime video tip to help you make the most of your "healthy" snacks.
In The ZIED GUIDE™:

Move Over Deprivation...Will Moderation Be the New Diet Mantra?

How do you define "moderation?" A new joint program by the American Dietetic Association & the Hershey Center for Health and Nutrition strives to teach the moderation concept to millions of Americans to help them eat more healthfully. Learn more about the program (and weigh in with your own thoughts) in my new ZIED GUIDE™ post.

How to Fit Into Your Family Genes

If you're like me and grew up in an overweight family, you may believe that you were destined to be overweight as well. Despite the countless hours at the gym, you may still think that losing weight and keeping it off wasn't possible. At the very least, you may have resolved that even if you put your heart and soul into eating better and less, and moving more, you still wouldn't have the thin thighs, flat abs, and perfectly toned bum you secretly longed for.

Although more than 6,000 genes that contribute to body weight have been identified, they're not the only things that have a say in how much you weigh. Your environment and how you choose to live The environment also plays a key role. According to Dr. David Katz, director of Yale University's Prevention Research Center, "practicing a healthful lifestyle-consuming healthful foods and getting enough daily physical activity is a great way to nurture nature, and compensate for weight-promoting and other unhealthy genes."

To help families learn to manage their genes, I wrote Feed Your Family Right: How to Make Smart Food and Fitness Choices for a Healthy Lifestyle (Wiley, 2007). In the book, I outline ways to help readers create food and fitness plans and goals based on each family member's unique calorie and nutrient needs, tastes and preferences, and lifestyle. I use these strategies with my own sons (they're 12 and 8 years old) to empower them so that they'll grow to be healthy, mindful, and active adults.
