Greetings!
Hope you're all doing great this week! For me, it's birthday week! I turn - dare I say it - 41 on Friday! I have and will always be a sucker for birthdays. I love cake, wishes, and presents (who doesn't?!) I probably enjoy celebrating the birthdays of others, especially those of my two boys, more than my own - though believe me, I do love having my one special day each year. Though I don't really feel old, what helps me feel and stay young (and not get too wrapped up in how fast life goes by) is to keep busy and active. I also try to focus less on the fine lines emerging on my face and other disheartening things (can you say GRAVITY) and spend more time watching and guiding my boys as they go through life. And of course, when it's my birthday, I count my many blessings and always vow to work hard to be a better person. In this week's ZIED GUIDE™ you'll find my nutrition tips to help you runners and walkers participate successfully in charity events this upcoming Fall or Winter. I know my family will attend the Tri-State Walk for Polycystic Kidney Disease in NYC on Sunday October 24th. PKD doesn't get a lot of media attention but affects the lives of many Americans including very close friends of ours and several of their family members. If you'd like to come out for this one, I'd love to see you, and hopefully my nutrition tips will help you get through the event like a true champ! Also in this week's newsletter, you can find out if your favorite summer drink gets high marks in nutrition. If you have high cholesterol levels or a family history of the condition, you'll likely enjoy an About.com article that uncovers superfoods that may help you fight high cholesterol. And whether you had a baby five years ago or just now, I'm happy to share with you my latest blog post on caloriecount.com to help you get your nutrition and fitness groove back after baby. Finally, I'll answer a reader question about t oddler nutrition--thanks to Julie Crispell from Montreal, QC for posting it! Have a question, suggestions, or idea for an upcoming ZIED GUIDE™ newsletter, article, or blog? Please post it on Facebook,
Twitter, or via email. If you love what you read, please recommend this newsletter to a friend! And even if you don't have birthday coming up, have a great week! Best, Elisa |

From CalorieCount.com: "How to Get Your Food & Fitness Groove Back After Baby"
Let's face it--we've all seen countless celebrity moms looking
unbelievably fit and trim in photos splashed across the pages of our
favorite magazines or in televised interviews within weeks of having a
baby. And I'm sure like me, you probably have a few friends who looked
like they never even had a baby soon after delivering their bundles. But
for most of us, getting our bodies back after having a baby isn't
something that happens overnight. And it's no surprise that erratic
feeding and sleeping schedules and family and work demands (not to
mention hormones!) make it a real challenge for mothers to reclaim or
develop healthful food and fitness habits and manage their weight. Read the rest of this article and find out how to get your groove back after baby.

Your Question Answered: Toddler Nutrition
Question: My daughter is turning one and seems to
eat A LOT! She's very tall for her age and her weight is proportionate. But at what age do I worry about portion control? I try to balance her
meals with all the food groups...a typical meal would be chicken, sliced
cucumbers, a piece of whole wheat toast, some cheese, and some
fruit.
~Julie Crispell, Montreal QC
Answer: I'm so glad
you asked about portions. We Americans have lost sight of what an appropriate
portion of just about anything looks like! It's very important that we parents
lay a healthful foundation for infants and children to help them meet their
needs for growth and development while not promoting overeating that can
contribute to overweight......Read the rest of Elisa's answer on The ZIED GUIDE™blog.
