Greetings!

Though my kids don't start back at school until after Labor Day and our family will have a week's vacation to look forward to (starting with a low-key family birthday celebration for yours truly at the end of August), I feel like the summer is definitely drawing to a close. In one respect, I'm excited about that since our 12 year old, who's been having a great time at overnight camp, is finally coming home this Sunday (I cannot wait to smother him with hugs and kisses--if he lets me, that is!). On the other hand, I'm not feeling like my usual perky self because of a wrist injury I've had for more than 8 weeks; though it's healing, my progress is slower than I expected and I still feel discomfort most of every day. I also have to have a benign mole removed from my back this week which does not make me happy, though I know it's necessary.

Though my mood has not been great, I tell myself everyday that things could always be worse. Not to sound sappy, but I always try to take time each and every day to be thankful for the many blessings in my life, and try to take it one day at a time, and stay busy with work, fitness, family, and friends. And when I'm down, I try to set new goals related to food and fitness to myself stay mindful of the choices I make that impact my lives and that of my family. I also think goal-setting can help get anyone out of a rut. For this summer, I set two goals: to walk more than 20 miles each week and to drink more water (and less diet soda). So far, so good. What are your goals? And have you made progress achieving them?

In this week's newsletter, you'll learn a few things that can be helpful to you whether you're setting goals that relate to food or just want to be a more savvy consumer. You'll learn how to spot food labels that can sometimes dupe you. You'll also get the skinny on all the different kinds of milks you'll find in the dairy aisle. Those of you who have kids involved in sports will get some expert nutrition tips from registered dietitian and author Mitzi Dulan in The ZIED GUIDE™. You'll also find an answer to a question from a Galtime.com member about weight gain post smoking cessation.

Thank you for sending me all your questions---please check back each week for my responses. You can continue to post questions or suggestions for upcoming newsletters, articles, or blogs on Facebook, Twitter, or via email. Proud Contributor on GalTime.comYour Question Answered

Someone recently asked me the following question on Galtime.com:

What can I do to boost my metabolism? I quit smoking and I eat right, but I seem to be gaining weight anyway. Help!

"Your body is like an engine and needs constant sources (but not excessive amounts) of fuel. The very best way to boost your metabolism so that your body can perform optimally both physically and mentally is to consume some foods and beverages every few hours. There's no magical number of hours that should pass in between eating occasions. However, a good rule of thumb is..." Read the rest of my response for tips on boosting your metabolism

Do you have sporty kids? Do you worry about whether or not they get enough nutrients to meet their needs to help them grow and perform optimally? I recently connected with registered dietitian Mitzi Dulan to discuss this very topic. Here's a glimpse of what Mitzi had to say:

"Working with professional athletes, I explain that their body is like a well tuned, high performance race car and proper maintenance is the key to getting the most out of their body when it comes to performance. This is especially true for kids involved in sports. Not only do they need to receive proper nutrition for athletic performance but for growth as well. Here are a few tips to keep those engines going and growing..." Read on to learn Mitzi's top tips to help your kids get and stay on a healthier eating track
