Greetings!
If you're like me, you're gearing up for summer. Whether you're a mom or dad looking forward to the end of the school year, or planning on taking a vacation at home or somewhere else, it's likely you look forward to the bright sunshine, warmer temperature, and more time with family and friends. In this newsletter, you'll read about food and mood, how to eat and what to buy (and avoid) while pregnant, how to pump up your potassium intake, and tips to making smarter picks in the grocery store. I'm busy preparing for my talk on teen nutrition needs at Food For Your Whole Life, a two-day conference for consumers and professionals that will be held on June 6th and 7th in NYC. There's still time to register for the conference (headlined by the ever-popular Dr. Oz), so be sure to check out foodforyourwholelife.org for more information. Have a great day! - Elisa |
This Week On ScreenWe all have stresses in our lives - illness, work and family commitments, and surprises that come out of nowhere on any given day. Some of you have told me you deal with stress by taking a fitness class, a run, walking or talking with a friend, hitting a punching bag, cleaning your home, or dare I say it - having sex! Some of you de-stress by turning to comfort foods like chocolate or cheese. Did you know that what you eat, when you eat, and how much you eat can have a profound impact on your stress level, mood, and overall outlook on life? I had the opportunity to discuss mood-boosting foods at the gorgeous Whole Foods on the Upper West Side of Manhattan for CBS.com's Health and Wellness show with Dr. Jennifer Ashton; take a peek!

Falling short on potassium? If you're like most Americans, you are! Here's a rundown of this major mineral-what it does, why we need more of it, and where you can find it: http://caloriecount.about.com/power-potassium-get-enough-b423654 We all know we need to eat better. One way to do that is by limiting processed and packaged foods which oftentimes pack in too many calories, too much fat, sugar, and sodium, and too little fiber. But don't despair - help is on the way! I was excited to be a judge for Prevention magazine's annual Best Food Awards. The cool thing about the Best Food Awards is that it "names names" - the best packaged, ready-to-eat foods on the market, that is! The article appears in Prevention's June 2010 issue (on pages 98 to 105); check out the online version.
