Greetings!

President Lane Kay stepped up for his first meeting with gusto and visitingAmy, Lane & Robin Rotarians Fred Tuncay of Rancho Cucamonga and Wayne Alexander of Victoria, Texas Rotary were on hand for the festivities. President Lane's first order of business was to pass along the President-Elect pin to Robin Smith and the Service Above Self pin to Amy Ayoub. He reminded members of Rotary's 2012-13 theme of "Peace Through Service" and also announced HIS theme for the year - Word hard, play hard and laugh even harder! The hand clappers have been reintroduced back into the Club and were used proudly and loudly as we hummed happy birthday to Blake Guinn. President Lane reminded everyone to sign up for the 18th annual Summerlin Patriotic parade July 4th. Blake volunteered to captain the July Birthday Bash, with PP Linda Bertuzzi (10-11) following in August. July 10th is a very important meeting with our new District Governor Sylvia Whitlock in attendance. The board meeting will be held at 11:00 am, with all members welcome, immediately followed by our regular meeting. Bring a guest as this is a great opportunity to invite someone to learn more about Rotary. Presidential recognitions went to PP Paul Bell (98-99) for his new car purchase, to Rob Goldstein for leaving the debunking without saying goodbye to his best friend President Lane, and to meeting captain and PP Roger Tabor (02-03) whose wife Amy secured all of the team members for today's program. The "Raul" awards, our Club's equivalent of the debunking Oscars, were presented to PP Linda for her role as the really wacked evil queen, to the Smith sisters, Carla & PE Robin, for their over-the-top performances as the evil stepsisters and to PP Dulcinea Almazan (11-12) as Cinderwhite. Cross-fines were tame, considering the ammunition from the debunking - to PDG/PP Roy York (95-96/09-10) for an whimsical and awesome script, to PP Laura Fitzpatrick (08-09) for missing the debunking to accept her Presidency of the County Fiscal Officers Assn and not wearing her Rotary pin, to PP Roger for his excellent portrayal of bipolar dwarves and to Greg Clemens for his son Ben's multiple college scholarship awards at graduation.

Trenton Tabor

PP Roger's son, Trenton Tabor, presented one of the newest and greatest tech devices being developed right here in Las Vegas. It's called Romo and it's a consumer-friendly docking station of sorts that turns your iPhone or iPod Touch--actually, any smartphone--into a robot that you control from another smartphone through a Romo app. You drive him around. You control his facial expressions. Turn on the camera and it's a spybot. Trenton demonstrated Romo's roaming capabilities and shared some exciting new apps that will be available soon. Currently it is retailing for $149 and is available in many color choices. Trenton is interning for the summer to be a part of the evolution of Romo into a must-have everyday gadget for consumers. As Trenton said "The tech scene in Las Vegas is on the move. Watch for the future!"

We watched a powerful and moving video about high school junior Paola Ruiz's personal tragedies and triumphs before, during and after her Rotary Youth Leadership (RYLA) experience. As her mom was dealing with a fatal illness, she made her daughter promise to go to RYLA for the once-in-a-lifetime experience, reminding Paola that it would never pass her way again. Paola did just that, and thanks to the strength, leadership and many friendships she developed at RYLA, she was able to return to high school and earn a full scholarship to MIT, along with financial assistance from Rotary. This is your Rotary at work!

The Debunking

The world famous debunking performersOutgoing President Dulcinea Almazan received a debunking worthy of royalty. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful evening at PP Scott and Sandy Stolberg's castle, complete with a moat (okay, it was a pool). The Stolberg's prepared a great feast for us complimented with appetizers and side dishes prepared by members and guests. After dinner, the evil stepmother and queen, PP Linda, arrived with her princesses, the Smith twins played by Robin & Carla, and step-sister Dulcinea, immediately renamed Cinderwhite, who took up the rear of the procession to begin performing her menial tasks caring for the castle and its occupants. After being teased by the royal ladies and taking over the position of "fairest in the land", Cinderwhite fled into the forest where she met the famed dwarves - Scruffy (PP Drew), a conflicted Cranky & Dwarfette (PP Roger), Dizzy (PP Allen) and one whose name cannot be reprinted (PP Scott). When the queen learned of her new living arrangements, she sent the Huntsman (PP Paul) to, well, you know the part about the heart! Of course, he failed, so the magic mirror Googled Cinderwhite's location and the queen went off to finish the job. The queen found Cinderwhite and offered her a poisoned apple - no, not THE Apple. Cinderwhite took one bite and fell into a deep sleep (with one eye open), only to be rescued by the frog prince, which turned into her handsome fianc Pio.  She is now living happily ever after! Thank you to PDG/PP Roy for his movie-worthy script, which probably was mangled a bit during the presentation, but fun nonetheless. Past President Dulcinea thanked the members and Board and announced the 2011-12 Rotarian of the Year was PP Allen Puliz and the Service Above Self award went to President-Elect Robin Smith.  Additional pictures are posted on the Club's facebook page.

The 2012-13 New Rotary Year is Upon Us

We are celebrating the beginning of another new Rotary year, with the induction2012-13 Vissionaries logo of new Presidents, new Boards and new District Leadership. None of our leaders are really "new". They have been in position for their roles for several years and are ready to bring their own vision and unique qualities to this extraordinary organization. District 5300 has the privilege of sharing this year with District Governor Dr. Sylvia Whitlock, who was the first female President in Rotary after the Supreme Court decision to mandate that women be allowed to join 25 years ago. More than ever this year is an opportunity to shine as a Rotarian by honoring our history and traditions, our dedication to end Polio globally, by bringing water, sanitation and education to every corner of the world, by giving back to our own communities and by making a difference one Rotarian at a time with "Peace Through Service". Make a pledge to step your service up a notch this year - get involved with a committee, bring in a new member (or 2 or 3) and help Rotary flourish.
