Las Vegas Skyline and Rotary Title

Greetings!

Thank you to PP Scott Stolberg (07-08) for organizing an outstanding meeting team. We welcomed newly appointed Executive Assistant Governor and PP Randy Pote of the North Las Vegas Club, Betty Mahalik of the Summerlin Rotary Club, PP Richard Portaro (92-93) and his wife Cynthia, and Michael Imperi and Dr. Russell Smith of the Alexander Dawson School at Rainbow Mountain, as well as our TLC team (see article below).

President Dulcinea reminded everyone of the Holiday Party at Michael & Kim Woodfield's home on December 3rd and to bring a $20 gift for the gift exchange, as well as canned food for Catholic Charities. PP Roger Tabor (02-03) will be the December Agassi Birthday Bash captain.  PP Allen Puliz requested applications be submitted for any high school juniors being considered for RYLA in  April, 2012. Betty announced her Club's wine raffle on December 13. Presidential Recognition was given to PE Lane Kay for his turkey attire at the Booker Thanksgiving event and a thank you to all who attended. Cross fines to EAG Randy for misspelling our Club's name, to PP Linda Bertuzzi for the messiest booth at TLC, to Robin Smith & PP Linda for not wearing their TLC shirts at the meeting and to Blake Guinn for the Dolphin's painful loss to the Cowboys.

The Portaro's and PDG Roy York

PDG/PP Roy York (95-96/09-10) presented a special gift to PP Richard and Cynthia Portaro from our membership to help them through the difficult loss of their son Mikey and daughter Chrissy this year. The Portaro's expressed their heartfelt thanks for the prayers and support our members have given to their family and reminded us all that this act of love from the Club was what Rotary is all about. Richard also received a proper "pinning" of his Paul Harris pin from PDG Roy. We have missed you Richard and look forward to seeing more of you soon!

ADL No Place for HateOur featured speaker was Phyllis Friedman, Director of the Nevada Anti-Defamation League. The ADL was started nearly 100 years ago in Chicago to stop anti-Semitism activities. The ADL is not a faith-based organization and is now the nation's premier civil rights/human relations agency, fighting anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry, defending democratic ideals and protecting civil rights for all, through a network of 30 regional and satellite offices in the US and abroad. Currently the ADL is focusing on programs in the schools to combat the increasing bullying via electronic media. Phyllis said more parents need to monitor their children's internet activities, including websites visited or Facebook friends and activities. The internet provides anonymity to the attacker, and the number of girls instigating the bullying is on the rise. The ADL has also started the No Place for Hate campaign with goals to combat prejudice and to stop those who, because of hate or ignorance, would hurt anyone or violate their civil rights. By participating in No Place for Hate activities, schools educate their students to foster understanding of the many cultures, religions, and traditions that are shared by members of our increasingly diverse and growing community. Visit the ADL for more information.

Teen Leadership Camp

2011 TLC team

With the entire month of November dedicated to the service of youth, it was fitting that at our final November meeting we hosted our returning Teen Leadership Camp students Phillip Veale-Broads with his parents Barry and Jill, and Reilly Barth with her mom Melissa. The students are from the Alexander Dawson School at Rainbow Mountain, who has been our Booker Thanksgiving partner for the past nine years.

144 students from Southern California and Southern Nevada travelled by bus to the Irvine Recreation Park on November 4 for a 3 day event focusing on leadership and self-awareness. They were immediately thrown into groups, teams and bunk houses as strangers and over the course of a few days created incredible bonds with new friends, all the while learning important lessons for their personal, academic and future business lives. Lead by last year's RYLA students, the 8th graders were faced with solving moral dilemmas, understanding personal and cultural differences, as well as charging head on through individual roadblocks that were preventing them from moving forward. Philipp told us that he learned everyone "has their own cancer, physically or figuratively" and it's their choice as to how they will let it control their lives - it's important to "let go of the cancers" and live a full life. Reilly said she was surprised at how everyone came together so quickly, no matter their backgrounds, and that she has been able to bring back many of her new leadership skills to her school and personal life, as well as many new friends.

A special thank you to Vocational Chair/PP Allen Puliz(04-05/06-07), PP Linda Bertuzzi (10-11) and Robin Smith for representing our Club as Rotary facilitators at the event.   You can click on TLC 2011 for photos of the weekend.
