Las Vegas Skyline and Rotary Title

Greetings!

As our Nation comes together to remember 9/11, ourMap of Ukraine Club has been given an incredible opportunity this week to continue the healing of that day by embracing citizens from the Ukraine and furthering Rotary International's vision of international cooperation and peace.  About 10 years ago the Las Vegas Fremont Rotary Club was asked to participate in a program called Open World, which hosts Judges from Russia and surrounding countries, such as Ukraine, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan. Our Club grabbed the opportunity, and due to its great success, we remain a vital part of the Open World visits to Las Vegas.

Open WorldThe Open World Rule of Law is different from other Open World Programs, as those target other professions including education and commerce. The five judges are accompanied by a facilitator who speaks fluent English and two to four interpreters who use high quality and sophisticated equipment, allowing simultaneous translations. Regardless of their country of origin, they all come with an interest in American law - how we conduct trials, investigations, judge selections, and opportunities to enter the field of law regardless of gender, race, and religion.

Beginning in Washington DC, they visit courthouses, shadow judges during real time cases and have the opportunity to learn from American counterparts to consider those portions of their jurisprudence they feel may benefit from change. As you know, there are major differences in the judicial process around the world that usually don't include a trial by your peers/jury, being given representation if you can't afford it, and being innocent until proven guilty. While many countries use portions of these rights, there are still cases of the innocent not being allowed to defend themselves, being held without bail for long periods, sometimes longer than if found guilty, or being released without any trial. Things we take for granted, such as trial by jury, are seldom done, but are now slowly taking hold - a direct result of the Open World Program.

Rotary provides a more social aspect to their visit by concentrating on family, fun, visiting places of interest or having a good old fashioned bar-b-que, or as we did one year, celebrating Thanksgiving. What we provide is intangible and long lasting. The biggest lesson that we, and our guests, learn is that we are all on Planet Earth as one family and our similarities are far greater than our differences. We all want the best for our family, are proud of our countries and have accomplished something with our lives. Each year one judge always says "you are nothing at all like we imagined."

Our moJudges at Booker T-Dayst incredible year was when the judges served the Thanksgiving meal with our Club at Booker Elementary. They loved it and, as they left Las Vegas, they all agreed it their most memorable experience. It beat out any of the judicial events by a unanimous vote. That's why we are asked to help each year. Pat yourself on the back! Don't miss Tuesday's lunch with our guests, or the dinner our Club is hosting at PP Linda Bertuzzi's (10-11) home on Wednesday.
