Dear Greetings!

Pres Dulcinea

As we round out Membership month, I ask that you take a moment to reflect upon your first experience with Rotary. What was it? Who invited you? How did you feel before and afterward? What was your response when you were asked to consider membership? These memories are quite vivid for me. Thanks Drew Levy for asking me to consider Rotary. I would not be here if it was not for his hospitality.

This hospitality is the reason we continue to grow our Fremont Rotary family. We have inducted two extraordinary individuals during August - Rob Beck and Jackie Oxley, and our third new member, Dennis Weaver, will be inducted on August 30th. Thanks to PDG/twice PP Roy York and IPP Linda Bertuzzi for sponsoring these vibrant new members. I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday and celebrating our Fremont Rotary family.

Sincerely,

Dulcinea Almazan, President

Last Week's Program & News

We began week 8 of our new Rotary Year with the induction ofJackie Oxley Jackie Oxley, who became the newest member in the world on August 16. Jackie was sponsored by PDG/PP Roy York (95-96/09-10) and, after several visits to our Club over the past few months, she decided Rotary was an organization she wanted to be part of each week. Welcome Jackie - we are so proud to have you in our Rotary family! We welcomed visitors Russ Swain of the LV Club and Mason Workman of Stiles Insurance, who has also turned in a membership application, sponsored by Greg Clemens. PP Linda Bertuzzi (10-11) recapped the Agassi B&G Club birthday bash and received the Club's famous birthday hum in honor of her birthday, with accompaniment from the hand "clappers" provided by PE Lane Kay. President Dulcinea announced the Holiday Party will be on December 3 at the Michael Woodfield home and encouraged Blake Guinn to have his date in place by then. PP Paul Bell was recognized for being late and missing his meeting assignment, and then thanked for his generous donation of a new golf club as a raffle prize for our spring fundraiser. PDG/PP Roy reminded everyone of the Ukrainian Judges arrival the week of September 10th and the upcoming Caliente Rotary picnic on September 17. Ken Swanson passed out invitations to the Sonny West musical event on August 30th at the Imperial Palace.

Our speaker, Jonathan Ullman, Chief Admin Officer of the Las Vegas Museum of Mob MuseumOrganized Crime and Law Enforcement, gave an overview of the new museum scheduled to open in February, 2012. The former US Courthouse and Post Office was "sold" to the City of Las Vegas for $1 with the proviso that the building be forever used for historical purposes. An obvious choice for historical use of the building? A Mob Museum! The building was the site of the Kefauver hearings, the first televised Senate investigations of organized crime held several years before the more famous McCarthy hearings. It will be an interactive museum dedicated to the history of organized crime and law enforcement and will present a bold and authentic view of organized crime's impact on Las Vegas history and its unique imprint on America and the world. The museum will present the real stories and actual events of mob history via interactive and engaging exhibits that reveal all sides of the story about the role of organized crime in the U.S. It will offer multiple perspectives by providing a contemporary, engaging, challenging and educational experience.  You can sign up for updates on the Museum at The Mob Museum

KID CONNECTION FUNDRAISER

With hardships hitting more households than ever today, we have the opportunity to reach out beyond ourselves and join in a common cause - "Kid Connection". This is Las Vegas Fremont Rotary's first fund raiser of the new Rotary year to benefit the children at Booker Elementary School, the children of homeless families here in Las Vegas, and the children of Joplin whose schools have been destroyed. Each of these children can have a better day and a better outlook when given simple things such as school supplies and food. On Thursday, September 29, at Sedona Restaurant from 5:30 to 8:30, we will be hosting a private function with live music by The Wedge Brothers, plus food and drinks! The cost is $50.00 and we invite all Rotarians, their friends and family to join us. Bring donations of school supplies and/or can goods to add to the gifts! Sponsor banners are available for the cost of $500 for one event OR $1500 for this event, PLUS our Annual Fremont Street Party coming this spring! Great opportunity to show your company's commitment to our youth! Please make a point to visit other Clubs and share the news of this great event.  You can contact Fundraising Chair Robin Smith  for flyers and tickets.  702-460-5080

 Member Recruitment Ideas
 .

When it comes to recruiting club members, there are almost as many ideas as there are Rotarians, which is not surprising considering Rotary's diversity. A few ideas include:

Invite friends, colleagues, or neighbors to participate in club projects.

Give potential members a "Start with Rotary" postcard or wallet card.

Talk with potential members about Rotary's humanitarian work, including programs like PolioPlus. Mention the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's involvement.

Invite professional women in the community to club meetings. Initiate projects that focus on women's issues, and invite prominent women in the community to participate, speak, or lead.

For additional ideas, contact Adrienne Cox at [email protected]
