President's Corner
Dear :
Rotary seemed to be on the "minds" of a few media sources this past weekend!! We were featured in the Costco magazine, Costco article, as well as part of the interview with Bill and Melinda Gates on 60 minutes Sunday, Gates interview, both recognizing the efforts RI is playing in the eradication of Polio around the world.
Sunday, 24 October 2010 is World Polio Day. In honor of World Polio Day, The Rotary Foundation is happy to announce 2 for 1 recognition points for every online contribution of US$100 or more made to PolioPlus during 18-24 October 2010, CST. Rotarians may go to Polio Plus Contribution to make their online contribution. Rotarians will need to have registered with Rotary's Member Access. Through Member Access, Rotarians are able to access online services and features. Rotarians may register for Member Access at Member Access Portal. Please note that contributions are in US dollars and will receive a US tax receipt. Donors will need to print the tax receipt at the time of donation. Also, online contributions cannot be made on behalf of another individual, club or district.
RI expects to have a high volume of online traffic associated with this promotion. Please allow 4-6 weeks for the promotional points to appear. Once the promotional points have appeared in their accounts, donors may request their recognition materials. Let's give 100% from our Club!

Last Week's Program & News
Liane K. Wakayama, estate planning and probate attorney with Marquis & Aurbach, gave the Club an informative presentation on how to protect our personal assets through proper estate planning. She said without the correct plan in place, the estate can be subject to a lengthy and expensive probate process upon death. To avoid that, set up a trust to protect bank accounts, real estate, etc. She pointed out that after the death of a spouse, it's very important to protect the heirs in the estate in case of re-marriage and to re-evaluate the trust about every 5 years. If you would like to talk to Liane, contact her at 702-382-0711.
Thank you Meeting Captain Lane Kay for organizing team duties for the meeting. Lane also thanked the Club for the support of the JDRF event at the Springs Preserve and a special thanks to the Tabor's for opening their home for the "pre-event". The JDRF walk is November 6th and we need to know who will be walking on our Fremont team. Goal is for each of us to raise $100. Robin Smith reminded everyone to bring their pledge for Operation Christmas Child by Tuesday, October 5th. PP Russ Swain of the Las Vegas Club invited us to the Tailgate party at the UNLV/UNR game. Major Bill Clayson is returning home from Afghanistan for surgery. Great news on the return home, and best wishes for a successful surgery.
PP Paul Bell was recognized again for yet another article about his upcoming year as President for the GLVAR - and suggested that he just right a blank check to cover the rest of his new year as President and his photo with no Rotary pin. Ken Swanson and Robin Smith were noticeably absent from the JDRF event - attending another concert. Small donation to JDRF should help. Birthday wishes for Mike Clayson and anniversary best wishes to the Stolberg's.
Cross fines to Mike Clayson, Paul Bell and Laura Fitzpatrick acknowledging their particular sports team and their wins and losses. PP Swain cross fined for texting Mike Clayson at 6:30 in the morning.
PS - great time at the tailgate - thank you to the Big Club! |

Committee Reports
Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child is a project that provides gift filled shoe boxes to children in need around the world. As a club we have decided to get involved and to fill as many boxes as we can. The key dates are October 5th - all pledged funds due; October 7 - meet and shop (details to follow); October 14 - meet at Steve Reiter's to pack the boxes. Also, ask any of your contacts, such as hotels, dentists, etc, if they have anything they could donate to help defray the costs. This is intended to be a family event - including children and grandchildren. If you are interested in volunteering for this project please email Rob Goldstein at [email protected]

RI & District 5300 news
Weekly Foundation Thought
This week's Rotary Foundation Thought is about Club Goal Setting:
Clubs are asked to set annual giving goals for the Every Rotarian, Every Year effort. We're asking every Rotarian to support our Foundation with a minimum US$100 contribution. At the President-elect Training Seminar (PETS) this spring, our club president-elect will be asked to submit an annual giving goal for the upcoming year. History has proven that clubs that set goals follow through with them. Many clubs are exceeding that goal now. "We decided to try for a total of $600,000 or $200 per capita in our district," says PDG Holly Callen, D5950. "It seemed like a real stretch and it took us three years to get there, but by setting an ambitious goal, we were able to achieve it. This year we have raised the goal to $1million - $300 per Rotarian!" As our club sets its goal for the coming year, we should also remember to measure our success by the number of lives we've saved and changed. |
To our members:
Articles are due by the end of business each Thursday. If you send articles, please make sure they are word format, and all pictures must be jpeg format. Thank you for all of you who take the time to contribute - this is your newsletter and we need your hellp. |
