While contemplating some thoughts for the President's Corner, I was researching the past issues of District 5300 newsletter and RI Website for something "inspiring" regarding membership.  I don't think I could state the importance of continuing to grow our Clubs better than DG Roger Schulte:

"In spite of Rotary's reputation, we in the United States have been having difficulty growing our membership ranks in the last few years. Rather than spend hours delving into "the why," I suggest a simple, basic first step. Invite a prospective member to attend a meeting.

When was the last time you invited a prospective member to join you at a club meeting? How many members have you brought into Rotary over the course of your Rotary life?  One a year? Someone thought enough of Rotary and of you to extend an invitation to you to join his or her club. When have you done likewise?

A personal case in point. I joined Rotary in 1978. And though well connected in the community, I did not expend the effort to invite prospective members to the club. When I was interviewed by the district nominating committee for the district's governorship, all seemed to go well, until a follow-up question caught me off guard. A committee member first asked me what I would do as governor to increase membership in the district. I laid out many of my plans and creative ideas.

Then the follow-up question. "These are great ideas. You've been in Rotary for 30 years.  How many Rotarians have you brought into Rotary?" I thought for a moment and counted back over the years. Following The Four -Way Test, "Five," I responded. That was all that I could remember. Five in thirty years. I was embarrassed. I then vowed that whether I was selected as governor or not, I would bring in at least one new member a year from then on. Today I am proud to report that I have not only kept my personal pledge but exceeded it."

Fremont members - "ASK" someone to experience Rotary!  Don't keep us a secret.............

Yours in service through Rotary,

Last Week's Program & News

Amanda Hurst, current RI District 5300 Rotaract Representative, enlightened us with an informative presentation on Rotary International's role in providing guidance and leadership to our youth.  Rotaract is a global network of college students and business professionals, ages 18-30, in over 160 countries.  This "New Generation" of service is typically highly active, and able to participate in the Group Study Exchanges, Ambassadorial Scholarships and Peace Fellowships.  It is an opportunity for our youth to develop professional and leadership skills, emphasizing respect for the rights of others and promotion of ethical standards and the dignity of all useful occupations.  The LV Rotaract Club at UNLV was chartered in 2007 and currently has 17 active members.  It is a great opportunity for our own College students or young professionals to experience Rotary at an early age.  To quote RI President Ray Klinginsmith - "If we can get the Rotaractors more integrated into the family of Rotary, it will make it easier for them to join Rotary when they are ready to do so."  Incidentally, Amanda is doing more than "talking" Rotary - she is "living" the role she promotes to others.  She will receive her Master's Degree in Sociology in 2011, and hopes to continue developing her love for fulfilling the needs of others by working within the Department of Corrections (anywhere) or a local non-profit that focuses on the struggling youth.  We all wish you the best in your endeavors, Amanda!  For more information on Rotaract go to:   Rotaract

Thank you PP Al Guida for setting up the meeting team assignments early.   Reminder of the Building Block event at UNLV for Membership, Foundation and PR Chairs.  Guests included Zachary Clayson, son of PP Mike Clayson, Tina Swanson, wife of Ken Swanson, and Dennis Weaver, owner of The Dirt Doctor. Presidential "recognition" to PP Al Guida for his daughter Adrianna's UNLV article showcasing her extraordinary soccer skills, and PP Geoff Holmes was shared the story of his shoulder injury while lifting a barbecue cover.............really!  Special birthday wishes and "hum" to President Linda.  Best wishes from the Club to the Novotny's on the birth of their new granddaughter.

Weekly Foundation Thought

This week's Rotary Foundation Thought is about how effectively our Foundation matches people with money for positive results.

In the words of Arch Klumph: "Money alone does little good. Individual service is helpless without money. The two together can be a godsend to civilization." Your financial resources combined with your time, energy and talent is critical to Rotary's mission. It is worth noting that one hundred percent of our Annual Programs Fund (APF) contributions are spent on Foundation programs. These contributions are invested for a period of three years, with a portion of the investment earnings paying for the Foundation's administrative and fund development expenses.

This unique funding cycle keeps the engine of The Rotary Foundation running throughout the world.

AND A QUICK NOTE - more than $143 MILLION has been raised towards the $200 MILLION challenge from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.....way to go Rotarians!!!

 Rotoplast Mission Details

District Governor Roger Schulte has selected Rotoplast as his project this year.  And  the District-sponsored Rotaplast mission dates and location have been confirmed. Our team of 20-24 medical and 8 non-medical volunteers will be going to Retalhuleo, Guatemala between  Mar 13 - Mar 25, 2011. Retalhuleo is located in southwestern Guatemala. It is situated on the Pacific piedmont at an elevation of 784 feet above sea level. Retalhuleu is a commercial and manufacturing center for a fertile agricultural hinterland. There is great need for clef lip and clef palette surgeries in the city and villages. Application procedures for non-medical volunteers will be available through our district website in September. Medical volunteers should apply directly through
