Dear  :

Last Wednesday nite was another great nite at the Agassi Boys and Girls Club with the birthday kids.  The same usual gang of suspects showed up and we had a marvelous time.  As I was walking out, two of the kids who had been at the party were in the main study area, and both of them ran up to me and thanked me and hugged me for the party and the gifts.  The one little girl, Airika, had her arms wrapped around the gift bag and clutched it tightly as she hugged me.  I got a great big smile from her and walked away knowing that my fellow Rotarians and I had once again done something special.

When speaking as a PDG to groups I have always included the phrase that I think Rotarians are extraordinary people who do ordinary things.  Something I read recently has caused me to alter that statement.  Meip Gies passed away a few months ago.  Meip Gies was the lady who hid Anne Frank and her family during the holocaust.  Mrs. Gies died recently at the marvelous age of 100.  Shortly before her death in an interview she was quoted as saying, "I don't want to be considered a hero.  Imagine young people growing up with the feeling that you have to be a hero to do your human duty.  I am afraid nobody would ever help other people, because who is a hero?  I was not -- I was just an ordinary housewife and secretary."  Since reading that marvelous and profound statement, I have modified my thinking to be, "I think that Rotarians are ordinary people who do extraordinary things".  My fellow Rotarians I salute each of you.  Let's keep that thought in mind as we ponder this past year and the extraordinary accomplishments of this small, but powerful, club of ours.

Time is ticking closer to District Conference!  Be sure to go to the District website for details on the Conference being held at Green Valley Ranch in June.  Click here to register District 5300 Conference Registration .

Last Week's Program - 4-Way Test Speech Contest

Rotary International District 5300 hosts a Four-Way Test Speech Contest each year. This year the theme is The Future of Rotary Is Up To You. Rotary Clubs throughout the District invite students from local high schools to compete.

Students share perspectives on the Four-Way Test. Each speech must be based on Past RI President Herb Taylor's famous statement on business ethics.

"Of the things we think, say or do:  1.  Is it the TRUTH?  2.  Is it FAIR to all concerned?  3.Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

Understanding, appreciating, and expressing the true meaning of the Four-Way Test is the most important aspect of each speech.  Many times the students' thoughtful speeches unravel the complexities of Four-Way Tests in new and innovative ways.

Last week our Club hosted the Regional Contest at our regular meeting.  The contestants were Kenna McMurray of Moapa Valley HS, Soona Amhaz of Green Valley HS, Melany Seastrand of Las Vegas HS and Kelsey Thompson of Las Vegas Academy.  Each had won their respective Club and Group levels and our Club was their last competition before the final event in June at District Conference - and a chance to win $5,000!

Each speech was a compelling reminder of the importance of Rotary and what it's 1.2 million members worldwide have accomplished, and continue to do everyday.  More importantly, the speeches served to reinforce the importance of the 4-Way Test in our everyday lives at work and home and, as one student said, as Rotarians we are charged with passing the responsibility (of Rotary and to) "carry the torch from generation to generation".

Each of the student's presentations where phenomenal and it was a very difficult task for the judges to pick one student to move to the District level.  In the end, Soona Amhaz was named the winner and Kenna McMurray was chosen as runner-up.  Congratulations to all of the participants!

 Agassi B&G Club Birthday Bash
We had an amazing time at the Birthday Bash last week. Kids from 6 to 16 were in attendance along with Captain & Past President Allen Puliz, President Roy York, Past President Drew Levy, Lady in Waiting Linda Bertuzzi, Pres Elect Elect Dulcinea Almazon and extraordinary members Lane Kay, Rob Goldstein and Robin Smith.  The usual pizza, ice cream and cake were served and goodie bags, compliments of Robin Smith, were given to each child.  The simplicity of the things in the bags, such as pencils and erasers,  bring such big smiles to the children's faces and remind us every month of how important this event continues to be.

President Roy had this story to share:   There was a list of questions on the blackboard at The B&G Club, so we thought it would be fun to test the kids with them just for laughs.  They were of the school garden variety dealing with geography and current events like, "Where is Sacramento Located", Name a state that borders Nevada, B&GCLV means what?, and the last one was"The Jackson ________ (blank).  We went through the questions with the kids and when we got to the last one about "The Jackson ________, at first they didn't answer, then one boy popped us and said, "The Jackson Five", and a girl sitting with him said, "No, it's the Jackson Four now."  But, and here's also a twist, they couldn't remember his name.  Just shows ya how long your popularity lasts.

Thanks to all the volunteers - PLEASE step up to be May's Captain - you won't regret it!

Easter Seals Fence
Bright and early this past Saturday morning, an awesome group of Fremont Rotarians and  their children arrived at Easter Seals to spruce up the grounds and set the memorial pavers and benches sold to raise funds for the fence that is now complete around the Rotary Reflection Garden planted by our Club in 2001.  In a matter of a few hours the stones were set, the benches placed and we had time to enjoy Steve Reiter's now famous grilled whole chickens!  Thanks to Past President Scott Stolberg for all of his efforts in coordinating this entire event.  The garden is now a place of comfort and safety for the occupants and a reminder to us when we drive by of a job well done.
