SHUTTERBUG MAGAZINE REVIEWS MY TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY!
http://www.ireneabdouphotography.com

Shutterbug Magazine reviews my travel photography in its June 2009 print issue in the article, "Something Old, Something New, Something... What's New and Exciting Around the Web" by Joe Farace.

Mr. Farace writes: "This month's Reader's Homepage belongs to Irene Abdou, a world-traveling photographer and Shutterbug reader whose base is Germantown, Maryland. The first thing you'll notice about Abdou's images are the eyes of the people she photographs. Most of the time, especially with children, they are full of warmth and trust. This says a lot about Abdou as a photographer and as a person. These people who she's photographed in the most Third World of countries look at her with affection and maybe hope; hope that her images will alert the world to their situation and maybe, just maybe, make us care enough to do something..."

Greetings!

Two months in, I hope you've had a wonderful start to the new year!  As always, I've had a very busy winter season, first with my 13-day road trip through the national parks of Southern Utah, and then with a trip to Mali, West Africa, which I only got back from a week ago.  Time sure flies though - it's already starting to feel like ages ago!  Anyway, while Mali has always been one of my favorite countries in Africa, and this was my third visit, it was still my FIRST visit in 10 YEARS, and I'm very excited about the images I got, one of which I'll show you below.  In my mind anyway, it ranks up there as one of my best images of all time.
FEATURED PHOTO
Every newsletter, I choose a feature photo shown at the top of the newsletter, usually a new favorite image since the last newsletter, that I then offer a 10% discount on for a matted or framed fine art print.  But boy, was it difficult to choose this time, what with my Utah trip.  Based on the number of views on my photo-a-day blog post over the 13-day trip and other feedback I've received, I've decided to feature "Zion's Fire III."

A friend of mine, Alan Simmons, has visited Zion before and sent me some tips on where to go.  He said that the Canyon Junction near the entrance to the park is terrific for sunsets.  We got down there a bit late, but were greeted by the last light on the cliff faces.  I have never seen anything like it, not even at Arches.  The cliff faces weren't just glowing, they were on fire!  They looked like volcanos!  It was absolutely incredible...and lucky it appears.  It had been snowing all afternoon, and we were told afterwards that the mountains only glow when they're wet from a recent rain or snowstorm.  If you'd like to know HOW I made this image, check out my Utah Parks Road Trip, Day 7: Zion National Park blog post.  And to view my favorite 102 images from the American Southwest: Utah in a fullscreen slideshow, click here.

A fine art photograph of"Zion's Fire III" starts at $195 for an 8x12 print matted to 12x16, with print sizes going up to 40x60!  However, for the next 30 days, I'm offering "Zion's Fire III" at a 10% discount at any size!

PLUS, you'll see below that I've also introduced a new art medium - prints on metal!  My metal prints have a magical, brilliant luminescence while also retaining detail and resolution.  Again, in the next 30 days, I'm offering ANY fine art photograph PRINTED ON METAL at a 10% discount.  If you purchase "Zion's Fire III" as a metal print, then you'll receive a 15% total discount.  Metal print prices start at $245 for a float-mounted 8x12 single metal print.  Read more about metal prints here.

NEW RELEASES

The past few months have been all about Utah and Mali.  Click below to view new images of:
As I mentionned, I just returned a week ago from a trip to Mali in West Africa, and I am particularly ecstatic about my visit to Kalabougou near Segou, Mali, a village where numu women blacksmiths have worked as traditional potters for centuries.  The photo below has made it up into the ranks of my all-time favorite photos.  I absolutely LOVE the lighting!  This was yet another exercise in shooting candid portraits, which is kind of my specialty.  TransitionsAbroad.com, who I've done a few photo stories for in the past year, asked me some time ago to write an article about how to capture candid shots.  I've been so busy that I haven't had time yet, but I do hope to set aside some time for it soon.  I haven't yet finished processing my remaining Mali photos, but if you sign up on my blog to get posts by e-mail, then you'll know when those are ready (probably in the next two weeks).

PORTRAIT, EVENT, AND WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

As always, I'm available for on location portrait, event, and wedding photography.

I've just added two new portfolios to my website:
For weddings, I've just added a new album option to my existing leather album lineup.  My new Brilliant Albums feature covers with a unique metallic appearance, due to the protective coating on the cover's photographic paper.  It's a beautiful pearlescent sheen.  I'll be doing a blog post soon with photos and more information, but also feel free to set up an appointment with me to discuss your engagement and wedding photography needs and to view samples.
