SHUTTERBUG MAGAZINE REVIEWS MY TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY!
http://www.ireneabdouphotography.com

Shutterbug Magazine reviews my travel photography in its June 2009 print issue in the article, "Something Old, Something New, Something... What's New and Exciting Around the Web" by Joe Farace.

Mr. Farace writes: "This month's Reader's Homepage belongs to Irene Abdou, a world-traveling photographer and Shutterbug reader whose base is Germantown, Maryland. The first thing you'll notice about Abdou's images are the eyes of the people she photographs. Most of the time, especially with children, they are full of warmth and trust. This says a lot about Abdou as a photographer and as a person. These people who she's photographed in the most Third World of countries look at her with affection and maybe hope; hope that her images will alert the world to their situation and maybe, just maybe, make us care enough to do something..."

Greetings!

I must confess that I've once again skipped another quarterly newsletter.  But I've just been oh-so-busy!  I've already traveled four times to Africa this year, as well as domestically to the Florida for some landscape photography.  Plus, I'm in the midst of preparing for my fifth fine art exhibit of the year, and have won some important accolades!  Not to mention my increasing portrait, wedding, and event photography work.  So I hope you'll excuse my lack of contact, and that my new collections of images of the past 6 months make up for it!
FEATURED PHOTO
Infrared photo of palm trees at Myakka River State Park, FloridaPhoto District News, one of the most important magazines of the professional photography industry, selected this image, "Myakka Palms," as it's photo of the day.  "Myakka Palms," which I shot at Myakka River State Park in Sarasota, Florida, is part of my new "Alternative Reality" series of infrared photographs.  I love infrared because I'm an explorer, and infrared is a strange, different, exciting world.

Because I haven't converted my camera to infrared by removing its infrared-blocking filter, I had to place a visible light blocker on my camera lens, allowing just a trickle of infrared through the camera.  To allow enough infrared light to hit the sensor, I had to leave the shutter open for 100 seconds, just perfect for capturing the wind blowing through the palm fronds!

An archival fine art photograph of "Myakka Palms" starts at $195 for an 8x12 archival print matted to 12x16, with print sizes going beyond 24x36!  However, for the next 30 days, I'm offering "Myakka Palms" at a 10% discount at any size!  Contact me at photoswithsoul@gmail.com to purchase!

On Exhibit
My fine art photography exhibits have been keeping me very busy this year.  Last year, I exhibited frequently, but often with just one or two photos in a show.  Because of the time commitment and expense of showing, this year, I decided to focus primarily on solo, two-person, and three-person shows, with certain selected exceptions.  Here are some of the highlights since my last newsletter.
  • First of all, I'm in the midst of preparing for my next show in September, which is a 2-person show with photographer Diana Adams, at Marymount University's Barry Gallery in Arlington, Virginia.  The gallery has asked me to show images of Nigeria, so I'll be showing 20 photographs, including some never-before-seen, from "Africa's Beating Heart: Window to the Nigerian Soul."  You'll be receiving a separate invitation to the September 11th opening, but in the meantime, see the image below for a sneak preview.
  • In November, I'll also be in a 3-person show at the Gaithersburg Arts Barn in Maryland, with 20 travel, architecture, and landscapes images from my worldwide wanderings.  I'm calling this show, "Wanderlust."  More to come later...

  • I also enjoyed my first solo show, "Africa Dreamed," at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center in Frederick, Maryland in May-June.

  • If you read my last newsletter, you may remember that my photo, "Shouldn't All Dreams Be Created Equal," was juried into the annual outdoor billboard art exhibit, "Embracing Our Differences," in Sarasota, Florida.  I was able to go down to see it in the spring, which is how I ended up with my infrared photo of palm trees in Myakka River State Park in Florida, which Photo District News selected as it's photo of the day!  Anyway, I thought you might like to see a photo of the actual billboard exhibit, so you can click on the link above.
  • And finally, Diddywopps & Keeffers Fine Art in Monkton, Maryland invited me to show six images from my Montgomery County Fair collection in "After Dark" in May.
