It is run as a membership association and is overseen by a small group of dedicated volunteer residents (most of whom have other daytime jobs!)

              NEW YEARS UPDATE 2012

happiness

HAPPINESS

In our first steering group meeting of 2012 we decided to focus on Happiness as our theme for the year and to explore ways that we can share what this means for us as individuals, and how we can find ways of improving our own work/life balance. Hopefully our new Health and Wellbeing Group can really help with this! We have now set up a discussion topic on the website where you can share your own thoughts and ideas about this along with any articles/websites/books that you have personally found helpful.

GROUPS

If you have joined as a general member don't forget that you can then also join any of the groups and have more focused discussions. Our activities rely on the energy and involvement of members so if you want things to happen please become active in the group forums and offer your support to the group coordinators. All the coordinators already have jobs of their own so they really need your ongoing help and support to be able to develop the great ideas that come up.

Cash Draw - only £1 a month!

cashdraw

Interest in the cash draw is growing steadily and our first lucky winner is Chris Hemingway (well done Chris!). The amounts paid out (20% of the total monthly take) are quite small at the moment but should increase as more and more people sign up - and at only £1 a month the odds are really good! Once we have paid for the initial printing costs the draw will really help us cover our annual costs so a big thank-you to everyone who has signed up so far. You can print out the cash draw leaflet here and the standing order form here.

Consultation on New Homes Plan

A public consultation is currently in progress on plans that would see between 16,000 and 41,000 homes built in north Gloucestershire, including some 1,650 mainly on the Leckhampton Fields. The consultation is on the Joint Core Strategy (JCS) document, a joint project between Gloucester City Council, Cheltenham Borough Council and Tewkesbury Borough Council. When finalised, it will set out the scale and location of housing and employment development for urban Gloucestershire and its rural fringe for the next 20 years.

The consultation runs until 12 February so there is not much time to have your views heard. You can read about it in more detail - and find out what you can do - via the Leckhampton Online website

Parking Consultation
Thanks to everyone who attended the parking consultation drop-in session in November.

The Suffolks: Gloucestershire County Council has put the feedback received on the proposed scheme for the Suffolks on its website http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=104495

It is considering options to address some of the concerns raised and these are being discussed with councillors in January. Feedback can still be sent to the Council at parking@gloucestershire.gov.uk

The Bath Road: the results of the consultation are not yet available. The latest information is at

Local Trading History Exhibition 16-17 March
Bethesda Church Hall
Exploring Local Memories

We thought it would be good for everyone to be able to see what we have been doing with our four local primary schools and are now planning a Local Trading History Exhibition at Bethesda Church Hall on the 16th and 17th of March. You can find out more about the project via our history website www.cheltenhamsouthtown.org. Please let us know if you have any photos or items relating to our local shops over the last century that we could include in the display.

Connect Street Project

Due to the impact of both the parking and road safety consultations we have had to delay Phase One of our Bath Road Project. The working group is now looking at the best use of both the Community Pride Grant of £5,000 and the additional Cheltenham Environment Grant of £12,200 that were awarded to the initiative. You can keep up to date with the project via the website www.connectmystreet.org

Christmas Craft Fair - the '2011 Crimblefest!"

Santa's Little Elves!

The Crimblefest 2011 was a great success - even the snow stayed away!  The new generator and lights meant everything was warm as well as twinkly in the evenings.

Over the weekend we had numerous different crafters - about 50 over the three days - plus some fabulous local bands who all donated their time for free! The event raised over £1,500 for Cheltenham Connect with the money going towards the Bath Road Project. Thanks very much to everyone who helped to make the event such a success.

Go Green Group

The Go Green group will be meeting shortly to consider which projects to focus on for 2012. They would welcome suggestions from members of the Cheltenham Connect community. If you'd like to suggest a green initiative, please email Stuart on stuart@CheltenhamConnect.co.uk.

Dolls house gets 'eco makeover'

Go Green Group co-ordinator Rebecca has bought a dilapidated old dolls house from a charity shop and is giving it an 'eco makeover'. With no mini Nick Knowles to help her, she asked Crimblefest attendees to suggest their top five ideas for how the house can be refurbished with energy efficient and other 'green' measures.

She got some really good ideas - not just the usual suspects such as solar panels and loft insulation (as good as those measures are).  Suggestions included "wear a woolly jumper", "rainwater harvesting" and even a "green roof". The most interesting conversation was about the fact you can have as much technology installed as you like, but ultimately it comes down to how it's used.

Rebecca will be spending the next six months refitting the dolls house with as many of these ideas as she possibly can and although this will involve a lot of motivation it will also involve very little skill, so any budding dolls house refurbishment fans out there please get in touch! Email rebecca@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk

Business Mentoring Scheme

At the January Skillspace meeting we held a Business Question Time  with a panel of three of our four mentors and Stuart from the Go Green group, who took questions from the attendees about the issues facing small businesses. We had an entertaining discussion that covered business planning, aims and objectives, marketing, use of resources and other topics.

If you are interested in finding out more about our mentoring scheme, please drop an email to belinda@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk

February meeting

For our next SkillSpace meeting on the 21st February Sue Ratcliffe will be talking about Intellectual Property. She will explore trademarks, inventions, design rights and copyright: how to protect your designs and what you can do to improve your unregistered rights. She will also answer questions on these matters. This talk will be useful for anyone who has ideas, designs or businesses that they would like to protect. Maybe you have come up with an original idea and are having problems with people copying it? 7.30pm on 14th February at the Beehive.

New book from Connect Business speaker

geoffbirch

Local business guru Geoff Burch, who spoke at Connect Business in the summer, has just published a new book called 'Self Made Me'. It's described as a 'hard-hitting, no nosense look at being self employed' - so is likely to incldue some useful tips for many of us! There's further information on the Skillspace section of our website and the book is available from Amazon.

Speaking at SkillSpace

We have now booked speakers for the SkillSpace meetings up to May 2012, but if you have any topic of interest that you would like to talk to us about, please let Belinda know on belinda@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk. It might be business related, or it might be "My Story", how you got to where you are today, or any other topic of interest.

All Cheltenham Connect Skillspace meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at the Beehive, Montpellier Villas, and start at 7.30pm with an opportunity to network with other members.

Laptop Friday

We meet every Friday morning at Maison Chaplais, Andover Road, Tivoli. Come and join us for a coffee, cake and some co-working. It's a 'water cooler moment' for those of us who work from home!

 Community Group

The community group spent the end of 2011 working on the Christmas Fair and talking with the Green Group about whether we could develop our own version of the Not Far From the Tree Project (we love the idea but need people to help run it!). Other new projects for 2012 are currently being discussed. One of the things that we would like to do is to run a number of small fundraising events throughout the year and we welcome everyone's ideas. Suggestions currently put forward include quizzes, another Swishing evening, wine and chocolate tastings, a pudding club and an Auction of Promises.

We are also planning a 'Retro Picnic in the Park' (in Naunton Park) to celebrate the Queens' Jubilee on Sunday 3rd June. Everyone will be invited to wear 1950s dress and to bring their own picnics and gazebos. We are currently looking for local Swing Bands that would like to play at the event.

Community Section of the website
We now have a community section on the front page of the Cheltenham Connect website where you can see details of the Swap, Share and Save and Vision 21 initiatives, details on local policing issues and updates on the current parking consultation.

Please contact jenny@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk if you are interested in supporting our community initiatives.

Health and Wellbeing Group
This new group has been busy putting together plans for 2012. The raison d'être of the group is to promote a better work/life balance for us all and to actively encourage the culture of giving across the whole of Cheltenham Connect.

Some of the ideas that we have discussed include:
  • A 'Guerrilla Kindness' Campaign
  • Buddy Runners - so we can encourage each other :)
  • First Class Friends - connecting people who might want to start a new course or class together
  • Love My Neighbour Scheme
  • Regular Meditation group
  • Regular support circle for people going through tough times
  • Monthly Health and Wellbeing talks
  • Local Health & Wellbeing Practitioner Group
  • Local Health & Wellbeing Practitioners Directory
  • Local Mind Body Spirit Da

We hope to start the monthly talks in March so let us know if you would be interested in being a speaker. You can find out more, or become involved in any or all of these activities, by contacting vanessa@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk (and feel free to suggest other ideas!)
