Local People

Local Pride!

Cheltenham Connect is a rapidly growing local community initiative that  aims to strengthen and empower the residential and trading areas of South Cheltenham.

It is run as a membership association and is overseen by a small group of dedicated volunteer residents (most of whom have other daytime jobs!)

It is open to anyone who either lives or works in the area.

Cash Draw

cashdraw

As there was a delay to the printing of the cash draw leaflets we decided, in order to be able to offer a bigger prize, to do the first draw after the Christmas Fair in December. Anyone who signed up and paid in advance will now have their name entered twice so that they have a better chance of winning. Leaflets will soon be going out to all the schools and churches and we hope that the draw will help us to cover our annual running costs. You can see the leaflet here and print out a standing order form here.

Website

The new website has been working really well and lots of new members have joined over the last few weeks. Don't forget that you can email us any ideas that you have about other things that we could do. And just let us know if you want to be more actively involved.

Parking Consultation
A consultation drop-in session is being held on 18th November from 12-7pm at at Bethesda Church Hall in Great Norwood Street. This is a chance to see what is being discussed and to have your own say so, if you care about the issue, PLEASE ATTEND!! You can see our previous update here and the Gloucestershire County Council website now has the details for the proposed parking scheme for the Suffolks area

and for the discussions on the Bath Road

It will also include the details of the road safety scheme being proposed by the council and, after the event, you will be able to see the details online at www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/trafficschemes

Crimblefest volunteers wanted!
The Christmas Fair is coming up and we are looking for volunteers to help with decorating the tents, parking, offloading, manning raffle and plum pudding tables and generally assisting over the weekend. It's great fun, you can dress as silly and festively as you like and you will be helping to support our wonderful local craftspeople. We are also looking for local singers and choirs who want to come along.

Please email scarlett@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk if you would like to be involved.

BARTA Christmas Evening
The Bath Road Traders are planning a fabulous evening of family Christmas fun on Friday 25th Of November. There will be activities happening at different venues along the road, Santa will be turning up to assist with the official lighting up ceremony, and the activities start at 6pm.

The Suffolks Snowy Christmas Carols

From 6pm on Wednesday 1 December 2010 the Suffolks Traders Association will be holding their annual carol event. Taking place on Suffolk Parade, the event will give everyone the chance to sing-along with Cheltenham College Junior School Choir in the candlelight. A great evening for all!

Oral History Project
Exploring Local Memories

Over the last year we have been working with all four of our local primary schools exploring, with the help of older residents, how shopping and food production has changed over the last century. The project has been recorded in a book that we have created, and through film recordings that will soon be made available on our history website  www.cheltenhamsouthtown.org.

The project was funded through a National Lottery sustainability grant given to the local SPJARA residents association with whom we have partnered. It was an outreach project for the original Norwood Triangle renovation so we were asked to focus on the route of the Tramway and the Bath Road.  We are really grateful to Blue Sky Event and Media and The University's media department for their help with the project.

You can now see a preview of the book here (it takes a while to load!). It is possible to order individual copies but, as we have created it ourselves and the print run is so small, it is quite expensive. As there is currently so much else going on we have decided to delay the celebratory history event until the spring of next year.

Connect Street Project

There has been understandable trader concern expressed at the impact of the combined parking and road safety initiatives and how these might impact on people's ability to visit the Bath Road. As many deliveries have to be made to the front of the shops there was also concern expressed about how planters might interfere with their supplier's ability to load/unload. The working group is now re-visiting the ideas for the larger street scheme in light of this feedback and the possible road changes.

We all want the area to be an increasingly successful and thriving destination for people to visit and we are looking at ways to ensure this. We also want to make it easy for local people to walk and cycle to the shops - and to encourage them to realise, especially in such tough trading times, how important their support is to ensure the survival of our local businesses.

One of the options now being considered for phase one of the project is the introduction of 'Welcome to South Cheltenham' street noticeboards (showing a map of the area together with general information) at each end of the street, together with new cycle racks. We hope to have this agreed and completed within the next couple of months.

Through the recent Gloucestershire environmental grant the Cheltenham urban design team has also been allocated a further £12,200 to spend on the larger scheme and the working group will be looking at how this could best be used.

Christmas Craft Fair - the '2011 Crimblefest!"

The Christmas Craft Fair will take place under a tented village in the garden of the Exmouth Arms on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd December 10-6 and Sunday 4th December 11-4.

More than 45 local craftspeople will be taking stands, there will be a variety of musical entertainment and Santa will be in his grotto from 2-4pm on both Saturday and Sunday. We are currently looking for volunteers to help us over the weekend so let us know if you would like to be involved.

The event is great fun for all ages and really helps to support our very talented local craftspeople, so we hope that you will come.

Sustainable Homes Open Day

Ten private homes were open to the public in Cheltenham on Sunday, 11th September to show how their owners had improved the insulation, energy efficiency and environmental impact of their homes. The aim was to share practical experience and demonstrate new technologies which help to cut energy bills, earn income, reduce carbon emissions and keep warm in cold weather.

The scheme, which was part of the national Heritage Open Days project and was a joint project with Vision 21 and Transition Town Cheltenham, was a great success. In total, 511 visits were made to the ten homes. Plans are already afoot to hold another one!

Transition Cheltenham Festival

We will be taking a table on the Communities Day of the Transition Town Festival that will be held in the Garden Gallery in Montpellier from 23rd to 29th November. Stuart will be participating in a discussion group about car sharing and recounting his experience to date and on 25th Wendy will be doing a talk about the history of Cheltenham Connect.

Energy Neighbourhood Project

We are looking at getting involved with a competition sponsored by the Severn Wye Energy Agency which seeks to connect a team of 5-18 households to reduce their individual energy consumption.

The aim of the competition is not only to help reduce carbon emissions and enable households to make savings on their energy bills but also to help people understand that leading a less energy intensive lifestyle does not have to be restrictive or a trial, but can be about making simple changes to their everyday life.

Not far from the Tree

Some members of the group are interested in replicating a crop share initiative that has been going on in Canada called Not Far From the Tree. Please let us know if you would like to join a small working group about this.

Connect Business Event 2011

geoffbirch

The Connect Business Day was a great success with more than 200 people attending. You can see photos and feedback here:
http://bit.ly/sHc4VH

The standholders made some good new business contacts and everyone seemed to enjoy the day. The weather was amazingly hot considering it was 30th September. Martin Horwood MP officially opened the event and Cheltenham Mayor Barbara Driver was keen to talk to the attendees. Best selling business author Geoff Burch then gave us a really entertaining and inspiring talk.

One of the most positive aspects of the Connect Business Day even now, 6 weeks after the event, is that we are hearing of meetings, quotes, workshop attendance and new business ideas going on as a result of the day. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who made the day happen and Conect Business sponsors can be seen here: http://www.connectbusiness.org.uk/our-sponsors/

We are already planning a similar event for next year!

Business Mentoring Scheme

We have successfuly launched our business mentoring scheme and had very positive feedback from those mentees that have been/are being mentored. We hope to extend the scheme and are running a Business Question Time on Tuesday 10th January 2012, where we will have an open floor to ask the mentors about any aspects of business. This will enable potential mentees to work out which mentors they might like to work with going forward.

Community Group

We have been helping with the planning of the Christmas Fair and talking with the Green Group about developing the Under-The-Tree Project.

healthandwellbeing

Health and Wellbeing Group
The first meeting has now taken place and we already have lots of ideas to share. These include:
  • A regular meditation group
  • A support circle (for people going through tough times)
  • Monthly health and wellbeing talks on different subjects
  • A walking group
  • A Fitness Buddy Scheme (to encourage us to share our pain!)
  • Laughter Yoga(!) and happiness workshops
and we were really interested in the idea called The Good Gymn that you can read about here

Let us know if you would like to be involved in any or all of these. We will also be looking for someone who has the time to coordinate the group. Please contact jenny@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk if you are interested.

In the interim we are also still exploring ideas for new fundraising events and a magazine library.
