News from Cheltenham Connect
Cheltenham Connect is Cheltenham's fastest growing local community initiative and  aims to strengthen and empower the residential and trading areas of South Cheltenham i.e. Naunton Park, Leckhampton, The Bath Road (south), Tivoli, The Suffolks and The Park. It is run as a membership association and is overseen by a small group of dedicated volunteer residents, most of whom have other daytime jobs!
It is open to anyone who either lives or works in the area.

JULY UPDATE 2011

It's amazing to think that it was only two years ago that Wendy Ellyatt circulated those first 150 flyers to see whether there was anyone in south Cheltenham that was interested in meeting up and looking to develop a new type of community. Now we've celebrated our second birthday and Cheltenham Connect is the fastest growing community initiative in Cheltenham; and that's all thanks to YOU!

We're very grateful for your feedback and support.

HAPPY SECOND BIRTHDAY TO US!

A number of us got together to celebrate our second birthday with a party at the Retreat Wine Bar in the Suffolks on 3rd July.

A big thank you to the Retreat for providing the venue and food for the evening; Pia from Vanilla Pod Bakery for the fabulous birthday cake; and for Anthony Salloum and Ann Blagdon for the entertainment!

REVIEW OF SECOND COMMUNITY CRAFT & MUSIC FESTIVAL

Starting with a gusty early Saturday morning, when the tents refused

to stay up and the display boards were crashing to the ground with a domino effect, the outlook for the second Cheltenham Connect Community Craft and Music Festival did not look good! But all that was forgotten as the local craft people arrived to set up their stalls at the Norwood Arms and a procession of musicians took to the stage both at the Norwood and Exmouth Arms.

And, when the sun came out, the scene was set for a beautiful

weekend for local people to come and experience what it is truly like

to be part of a vibrant local community. With everything from cupcakes to earrings and pottery plates to aprons, the craftspeople of the area offered the visitors a real treat whilst the children that came along were entertained by a very artistic face painter and bouncy

castle.

On the music and entertainment side, there was also a wide range from rock to jazz and choirs to belly dancing. You can see the gallery images from the festival here or feel free to post yours to our Facebook page.

On the more serious side of public information, there was a stand that gave locals a chance to learn all about the history of  Cheltenham Connect and the projects we are involved in that attracted a lot of interest.

BATH ROAD CONNECT STREETS PROJECT

We held an exhibition about the project at our summer festival (as part of the overall stand above) and it is now on show at the shop Cook in the Bath Road. Do pop in to see what we are planning. You will be able to watch our progress, share your own ideas or offer to be a sponsor via our website www.connectmystreet.org

Lots of people signed up at the festival to the new Friends of the Bath Road group and we hope that this will be a group of people who will then meet regularly to look after and maintain the planters once they have been created.  You can join this through the website or by emailing lizzie@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk
Bath Road Traders
The Bath Road Traders in action

The Bath Road Traders have now had their own very eye-catching red t-shirts made and are already meeting monthly to help keep the street looking good.

They have also taken over the running of the toilet in the Bath Road Car Park from the council so watch out for some fun improvements that they hope to make.

ORAL HISTORY PROJECT

On the 23rd of June Richard Pate and Nauton Park Primary schools came together for a fascinating history morning where, in front of an audience of 120 children) nominated children interviewed 15 older residents about how shopping and food production has changed over the last 80 years. We hope to complete the Leckhampton and St James' Primary school sessions before the end of the school term and the full recordings of the sessions will then be made available on our history website  www.cheltenhamsouthtown.org

If you are a local trader or resident (or have someone in your family) who would like to be involved in this please contact wendy@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk

SUSTAINABLE HOMES OPEN DAY

In association with UK wide Heritage Open Days we have joined forces with Vision 21 for Gloucestershire and Transition Towns Cheltenham to plan the opening of up to 10 Sustainable Homes to the public in Cheltenham on Sunday 11th September.

The houses will demonstrate aspects of Energy conservation, Insulation, Micro power - generation and the Sustainable use of water. The owners will be on hand to explain their experiences of adopting these measures.

We have chosen a variety of different styles and age of house to match those in our area and hope to encourage people to adopt sustainable measures in their homes to help protect the envionment, whilst saving money.

For further information take a look at the Go Green page on the Cheltenham Connect website.

CAR SHARING

Also this month, we have produced a draft Car Sharing Agreement for neighbours who would like to reduce the number of cars in the area and spread the cost of motoring. This will be trialled shortly and more details of how we get on will be available shortly.

REVIEW OF JUNE SKILLSPACE TALK

At the June meeting of SkillSpace, John Hepworth, from Hepworth HR, shared his experiences of working in Kazakhstan. He outlined how he came to be working there and some of the major cultural differences between working in an ambitious, muslim country and Britain. Kazakhstan is about the size of France, Germany, Britain, Poland and Spain together, with a population of 16 million and massive natural resources. So, inevitably, life is different in Cheltenham!

We're very grateful for Jennifer Lazenby for taking over the administration of the Community Group. She and fellow Community Group helpers were very involved in making the second Community Craft and Music Festival such a success.

Fundraising

NEW MONTHLY CASH DRAW

Cheltenham Connect has been doing some great work since it began in 2009, but with success has come more overheads such as printing, phone bills and insurance. We thought that a monthly cash draw would allow more local people to support our ongoing work and would help us to not constantly have to worry about fundraising.

The idea is simple. You commit to pay £1 a month for a year and every month your name goes into our draw. The winner of the draw then receives 20% of the monthly income from the draw (which if 100 of us join is £20 and 1000 of us join is £200!).

The odds are great, the money will stay within our local community and we will publish the monthly winners on our website.

You can print out a standing order form here and please enter the date of the 1st of August as we hope to start it then.
