Cheltenham Connect is the proud recipient of a second Cheltenham Borough Council Community Pride Grant

|

|
SEPT/OCT 2010Two successful grants! The big news for the month is that we have been awarded two grants! Cheltenham Council have given us a £4668 Community Pride Grant (making £5000 with the remaining amount from last year) and IBM have given us £500 towards a customised community laptop. Both of these will enable us to begin phase 1 of the DIY Streets Project that we have been planning. For this we will be looking at what we can do to make the Bath Road a more pleasant and community-friendly place. We hope to actively involve local artists and craftspeople in the project. You can read about DIY Streets on http://www.sustrans.org.uk/what-we-do/liveable-neighbourhoods/diy-streets and http://www.flickr.com/photos/sustrans/sets/72157622514056113/We are now starting to put together a working group (which will include BARTA, the local residents association and the churches) and will be seeking ways to involve the whole community. Due to Wendy's commitments, and all the other things that we have going on in the next couple of months, we won't really be able to start the project until the new year though. New TreasurerWe are holding an EGM after the Skillpsace meeting on the 12th October to formally nominate and elect our new treasurer and everyone is welcome to attend. One of the core group has offered to take over the role but other nominations are welcome. Think Locally Project Although not strictly a Cheltenham Connect Project (as it covers the whole of Cheltenham) Wendy has been working with Think Locally to create a Cheltenham version for their book series celebrating local independents. About 50 businesses have now signed up, Martin Horwood has provided an introduction and Cheltenham Festivals have just agreed to be the main sponsor. If you are a local independent business who would like to be included please contact Wendy for more details. You can read more about Think Locally hereSee some sample pages from the new Bristol book Examples of forewards Find 'Cheltindies' on Twitter and Facebook! Duplicate emails
We apologise to those of you who have joined more than one group if you are receiving duplicate event postings. This is a result of the way that we have had to set up the website as each co-ordindator currently posts their own events and some are shared. We hope to soon find a solution.

CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR 3rd, 4th and 5th December
We already have about 25 craft tables taken for the Christmas Fair so if you are a local craftsperson who would like to be involved please contact Scarlett as soon as you can for an application form. We only accept craftspeople working within a 20 mile radius of Cheltenham and everything has to be locally made. As before Santa will be finding time in his busy schedule to meet the children in the very magical Christmas Grotto!
This year the whole fair will have a Regency/Victorian theme and we hope that the Bath Road traders will join in the fun. Due to concerns about numbers the BARTA Christmas Lights event is now being held on Thursday 2nd and we will be lending them our main craft marquee on the night.
We have a few slots left for singers/musicians/bands/street performers who would like to entertain people and are particularly interested in finding more choirs to sing carols during the event. Please contact Wendy for more information.
LOCAL TRADING HISTORY PROJECT

The history website will be launched in November along with the South Cheltenham walking trail leaflet that we developed to commemorate the bicentenary of the Tramroad. We are hoping to invite everyone that has been involved to a celebratory event.
If you have any memories or old photos of the shops in our area please let Wendy know. We are currently looking for people who are interested in history and would like to help collect and organise the materials that are sent in.
In the longterm we would like to start digitally recording the stories of local residents who have lived in the area a long time and then make these available on the website. We also hope to create active links to local school history projects.

The September Business & Freelancers Networking Evening was well attended with Member Mike Reed giving a talk on '3 Ways to Make More Profit' and Becky Gardner talking on "Lessons learned from the Emerald City".
The next evening is on Tuesday 12th October when Catriona Murray will explore 'How can the Job Centre help small businesses?' and local trader and craftsperson Richard Jackson will share his personal story.
'Chaplais Tuesdays' are now held at Maison Chaplais in Tivoli from 10am on the 4th Tuesday of each month. This is an opportunity for anyone who normally works alone to bring their laptop and enjoy coffee and company! Click here for more details.
The 'Evening with Martin Horwood' was a great success and proved very interesting for all concerned. Martin told us about his own journey into politics and shared some stories about the very fascinating 18 months that MPs have been through. A big thank you to the Beehive for hosting the event.
