REVIEWING AUGUST 2010
With lots of people away August has been a pretty quiet month. We do have a lot being planned for the rest of the year however!
New TreasurerDave Savell, who has been a member of our core team from the beginning, has now offered to take over the role of treasurer. A massive thank you to Angeline Fuller for looking after our purse strings over the last six months. Dave will be formally elected at our next steering group meeting on the 16th September. Increased costsAs we haven't been able to find an equivalent alternative we have now had to commit all our networks to the new $19.95 monthly cost that the network providers Ning are charging (in fact we have paid everything in advance to receive a discount). Due to the success of our two major events our insurance costs have also now doubled. That means that we our ongoing running costs have suddenly risen to about £1500. Fundraising has therefore become much more important (!) and we are now looking for people who can help with this. Please let us know if you have any expertise in this area. Christmas FairThe Christmas Fair is taking shape nicely and we already have 19 craft tables booked. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are a local craftsperson who would like to be involved. This year we are running the fair as a themed Regency/Victorian event in association with the turning on of the Bath Road Traders Christmas lights and we are therefore expecting even larger numbers of visitors. DIY StreetsFor the last few months we have been exploring the idea of South Cheltenham running a DIY Streets initiative. You can read about DIY Streets on http://www.sustrans.org.uk/what-we-do/liveable-neighbourhoods/diy-streets and http://www.flickr.com/photos/sustrans/sets/72157622514056113/We think this could be a really powerful way to engage the whole community in thinking about our local landscapes and we have now applied for a new Community Pride Grant that might help us set up a pilot project. |

CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR We are already taking bookings for the next Christmas Craft Fair (which will be held on the 3rd, 4th and 5th December) and, to add to the fun, we are currently planning for it to be a themed 'Regency/Victorian' event.
If you are a local craftsperson who would like to be involved please contact Scarlett for an application form.
Or if you are a singer/musician/band/choir who would like to entertain people during the event please contact Wendy
HISTORY PROJECT The History Project is going well and we hope to have the main website launched in November. Let us know if you have any old photos of any of our local shops (or stories to tell about the old days). Once the site is launched we will also offer local traders the chance to have framed histories of their sites.
CC Go Green
Jo Worthy-Jones, the Cheltenham Community Wildlife Officer from Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust attended
the latest Go Green group meeting. There was much
discussion around potential opportunities for working in partnership
with the Wildlife Trust and the following three topics were agreed upon:
- Support for the University's Park Campus bird nesting installation project - Creating wildlife-friendly gardens - Generally working on greening our area
The
Go Green group is supporting the Cheltenham Transition Town initiative.
See the notice board at The Exmouth Arms and the Go Green or Vision 21 web-pages for information on interesting and entertaining films to be shown over the coming weeks.
The next Go Green group meeting will be on Thursday 7th October at 7.15pm at Becky's houses - please contact Becky (becky@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk) for
location details if you'd like to attend. This meeting will be a key
one as it will be used as an opportunity to plan our activities for
2011. CC Skillspace
The informal August networking meeting at The Beehive turned out to be a real brainstorming session on how we could set up mentoring and skill-shares. Watch this space! The next Business & Freelancers Networking Evening is at 7.30pm on Tuesday 14th September when member Mike Reed will give a talk on '3 Ways to Make More Profit' and Becky Gardner will talk on "Lessons learned from the Emerald City"! See the website for more details
Jonathan Pollinger hosted the Moka morning while Belinda was away and you can now attend the new 'Laptop Fridays' at Maison Chaplais in Tivoli. This group has also been supporting the 'Cotswold Jelly' co-workers events at the Norwood Arms (the 2nd Tuesday of each month).
Tickets are still available for the 'Evening with Martin Horwood' at The Beehive on Tuesday 5th October at 7.30pm, but space is limited so if you want to come please don't leave it too long to book. 'This will be an opportunity to talk to our local MP and ask him what it is like to suddenly be the party in government. What is it like being in the coalition? What has changed about their green ambitions? Not a party political evening, but a find out about politics evening!!!' Tickets are £15 to include a buffet supper and are available through belinda@cheltenhamconnect.co.uk
CC Community
Angela Rimmer has been doing a great job of developing the activities of this group. The existing Naunton Park Swap, Share and Save concept is now going to be further developed in the area and there is now a Spiritual Development Group starting on Tuesday 14 Sept in
Leckhampton. For more information please contact Carol Daniels 0845
052 5346; carol@caroldaniels.co.uk See the leaflet
This group is also organisaing a Murder Mystery Evening at Morans on the 31st of October with the theme 'Black, White and Diamonds'.

Tickets will be £30 (or £25 each for a party of six) to include 3 courses and a glass of wine and we anticipate that they will be going fast! Please email angela for more details (currently available to Cheltenham Connect members only)

Fundraising
| With the increase in our ongoing costs we are now looking for people with the time and experience to help us develop our fundraising activities. It would be especially helpful to find someone who is knwoledgeable about writing grant applications.
Please contact Wendy if you would like to b involved.
