From the Head of School:
A Note about May Day

mayday1pix

May Day is a wonderful tradition at Foote, reflecting the dedication and efforts of dozens of individuals from the Foote family, from students, faculty, and staff to our enthusiastic and encouraging parents. But what an outcome! The day is filled with smiles and hugs, dancing and laughter, and an occasional tear as we celebrate spring and our children.

I want to wholeheartedly thank the Music Department for producing yet another excellent May Day, engineering a superb marriage of music and hand-eye coordination for feats such as the Maypole dance, the Virginia Reel, and the Swords Sleights performance. Each of the dances, and for me in particular the Maypole dance, brings tears to my eyes. I watch and I wonder how it is possible to get five to 15 children to dance together so willingly and so beautifully, and I find myself cheering on every last ninth grader in the Sword Sleights dance as they create their six-sided stars, and as they march in front of the crowd, high-fiving everyone - from the middle schoolers who look forward to their chance as ninth graders, to the youngest lower school students standing in awe of their buddies.

I also want to salute the three teachers who were holding the Maypoles, who have been an integral part of many Foote May Days: Patty Chamberlain, Lisa Totman, and Nancy Worms. These teachers are part of the fabric of Foote School, and memory and tradition promise that they will always be a part of our lives.

My heartfelt gratitude to all of you for a truly memorable day.

Summer Reading!

A note from Head Librarian Lynda Johnson:

Starting today (May 31) during Library time, I am giving each child currently in grades K-5 the 'Summer Book' chosen by the teachers for them and you to read over the summer. If your child is entering grade 7, 8 or 9 in the fall, he or she will pigreading

have a selection of books from which to choose. Either a Middle School Humanities teacher or I will have introduced the 'choice books' to your children. The 'choice books' will be available in paperback at the Book Fair next week.

  •  Please be sure to look for an email from the Perrine Library (via Karen Longa) about Summer Reading early next week. Each family will receive a letter outlining the Summer Reading requirements specifically for each grade.
  •  Inside each Summer Book will be a bookmark with the web address for the Summer Reading page of our blog. There you will find updated lists of recommended books for each grade and two lists of suggested read alouds - one for younger children and one for middle grade students.
  • As I have been updating these lists over the last weeks, I realized that they can play an even bigger part in helping families with e-readers to find books that are a good fit for each child - without relying on the online booksellers who most often do not know much about the books they are selling. The books on the list are assigned to a grade more by appropriateness of content than by any specific reading level. Within a grade, independent reading levels and preferences vary greatly. Therefore, the list includes a wide choice of titles - something for everyone.

coindrivepiggybank

The Coin Drive in the classrooms, which will benefit the Jonathan Milikowsky Science and Technology Building, has attracted many thoughtful donors, including a young Foote student-in-waiting, right in photo, who added his piggy bank as an offering in his big brother's MAG class.

Many thanks to all the generous students who contributed.
