Salmon Release Trip Completes a Research Project
Sixth and ninth grade students traveled with their teachers and other Foote staff to the Salmon River in Colchester on Fri., May 4, for a full-day field trip centered on salmon. All of the students released several young salmon into the river and all shared their knowledge from research projects about a wide variety of topics related to salmon natural history and river ecology. Using posters and hands-on demonstrations during the morning session, each ninth grade student presented information on specific aspects of water quality assessment using both biological and chemical indicators. After lunch, the sixth graders presented a wealth of information on the biology, ecology and current conservation status of the Atlantic salmon. (Reporters came along too; see the NBC Connecticut story here, and the New Haven Register story here.)

Farewell to Soup as We Know It
The weekly soup for faculty and staff created by the third grade and Lisa Totman as a community service fundraiser has become the stuff of legend. But with Lisa's approaching retirement, the soup is slipping away. As a final farewell, today, Thurs., May 10, she abandoned soup to make a smorgasbord groaning with ham, vegetable platters, side dishes and bread. A soup-retirement cake was there to fete her amid numerous notes from faculty and staff extolling the virtues of her soup, her thoughtfulness over the years, and her devotion to Foote.

And Hello to Mrs. Totman's Science Kitchen - and a Successful Alumni Reunion

This year's Alumni Reunion had some surprises, including the announcement that with the impending move to the new building, Leslie Long's science room will become the Lower School Discovery Center, with Mrs. Totman's Science Kitchen as a centerpiece. The Kitchen was named in Lisa's honor by family and friends to pay tribute to her longtime dedication to teaching Foote students the science of cooking. Tearful and clearly delighted, Lisa was presented with the sign at reunion festivities at Foote Sat., May 5. | |
Massimo Calabresi '82, winner of this year's Alumnus Achievement Award, is joined at Alumni Reunion festivities by his parents, Guido Calabresi '46, former dean of Yale Law School and a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York, and Anne Tyler Calabresi '48, a social anthropologist, arts patron and founder of LEAP, the training and mentoring program for inner-city New Haven children, and Head of School Carol Maoz.
