Paying Homage to the Earth

Foote celebrated Earth Day today (Thurs., April 19) with an All School Assembly led by teacher Pam Harmon and Foote's Environmental Action Group. Jake Burt's fifth graders introduced the newly created virtual tour of Foote's trees. A thoughtful film by seventh grader Daniel Kuriakose detailed the importance of even the smallest effort to conserve water and energy.

Foote's Environmental Action Group (EAG) has been raising money over the years through sales of hot cider and doughnuts to donate to a worthy cause; the group announced at the assembly that this year's profits will be given to Urban Resources Initiative, a local non-profit promoting land stewardship, education, and urban forestry.

The EAG gave its annual award to Paul Elconin '85 of the Open

Space Initiative for his work with land conservancy. Elconin reminisced about his days at Foote as he noted the myriad changes the campus has undergone since his departure almost three decades earlier. "I remember doing the monarch butterfly project, and the butterfly wouldn't drink any water," he said. "Our teacher used a toothpick to tease out its proboscis to get it to drink."

The Assembly ended with the words of famed cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
