A DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOOTE

Degas, Revisited

The eighth grade's artistic efforts mirrored that of the artist Edgar Degas as they created sculptures in the manner of his "Little Dancer 14 Years Old," the only sculpture Degas exhibited in his lifetime.

The students drew figure sketches of one another in charcoal, then created armatures from the sketches. The armatures were wrapped in aluminum foil, covered with masking tape, then layered with papier mache pulp. Faux bronze paint completed the figures, which are displayed in the hallway of the main building. The students also learned about Degas' more complex process of lost wax casting to make his figurine.

The Human Side of Homelessness

Middle school students heard about the pathways to homelessness Wed., April 11, through a presentation by Joanne Goldblum, a Foote board member and president and founder of the Diaper Bank in New Haven, and Kellyann Day, the executive director of New Haven Home Recovery.

The two talked about how homelessness afflicts many individuals beyond those who have made poor decisions in life, that it affects families as much as single people, and that it is very much a local and community concern.

Questions abounded from students and faculty, and many stayed afterward to speak with Goldblum and Day about how they might become involved in efforts to end homelessness.
