A Very Special Day for Learning

We have had a full week (and a long weekend!) to reflect on the school-wide event, Unite Through Understanding Day, last Thurs., Feb. 16. Head of School Carol Maoz shares her thoughts on this great day here, and we wanted to give you a taste of what some of the students experienced by showing you a description of the workshops in which the 4th - 9th graders participated. K - 3rd grade teachers also arranged for age-appropriate activities including  parent and teacher presenters who shared customs, cuisines and arts from Cameroon, Ecuador, Japan, Afghanistan, and Turkey, among others. Photo galleries from the day may be viewed here and here. Enjoy looking through them and discussing the day with your children!

A DAY IN THE LIFE AT FOOTE ...

Third Grade and Continental Drift Theory
The third grade is studying Earth Science. They have looked at earth movement -- the layers of the earth, the movement of the plates (why they move, and the impact there of), and earthquakes and volcanoes. Included of course is why scientists think what they do, which is why they asked Yale PhD candidate Ross Mitchell to visit.

As part of his doctoral thesis Mr. Mitchell has come up with a theory of a new supercontinent many years in the future. The third grade teachers thought his theory very interesting and exciting, and also thought it terrific for the kids to hear directly from him. He was heard on NPR by a parent of one of Lisa Totman's students -- and by Foote librarian Lynda Johnson. We were excited to welcome Mr. Mitchell to Foote today!
