Help the 6th Grade Feed the World
|
The Sixth Grade is spearheading a project to donate rice through the United Nations World Food Program. Our goal is to donate 7,000,000,000 grains of rice to symbolize the 7,000,000,000 people in the world.
We would love all in the Foote community to help us accomplish our goal. All one needs to do is visit www.freerice.com. Once you are on the website, login as footesix and use the password xyz. You can then answer questions about geography, vocabulary, grammar, modern languages, and math. When you answer correctly, 10 grains of rice are donated. With the help of the Foote community, the sixth grade hopes to make a difference.

Stuffing Socks to Help Those Who are Homeless
|

Deb Riding's sixth grade class collected items needed for basic comfort and hygiene, then joined with MAG buddies from Margy and Ellen's class to stuff the items into socks for adults at Columbus House, New Haven's largest homeless shelter. Students were delivering the stuffed socks today, Dec. 14, to Columbus House.
A heartfelt and huge thank you to all the Foote families who helped with this community project.

A Day to Learn About What Once Was
|

Third graders marked their Early America Day wearing period costume and learning lessons introducing them to the history of the American colonies. These lessons are then reinforced four years later, when, as seventh grade students, they will research, learn about, then dress as specific historic figures and spend a day telling the stories of those characters' lives.

| Celebrating the Indian Festival of Lights |

Foote parent Vijayshree Erodula, the mother of fourth grader Kartik and sixth grader Nandini, visited Foote this week to show Kim Yap's MAG students the process for creating Rangoli, a traditional decorative folk art from India that uses colored sand.
Each student had an opportunity to fill in a shape with the bright sand to create an intricate pattern that is believed to bring good luck. Rangoli is often made during Diwali, the Indian festival of lights. Many thanks to Foote parent Veena Raghuvir, mother of MAG student Asha and third grader Kieran, who invited Vijayshree to share this tradition with our students.

| Marking the Holidays with French Delicacies | Croissants, mousse au chocolat, tarts, crêpes: French cookery has sweetened many a palate, including those of the students in Jenny Byers's French classes. Students celebrated the art of French dessert-making recently during a gastronomic event in the Sturley Room, learning about cooking and culture as they dined. Click here to view more photos.

| A Lesson in Chinese Art | Chinese guest teacher Wang Manchun helped ninth graders create replicas of Chinese Terracotta warriors in Karla Matheny's art class this week. The Terracotta Warriors are part of an underground army buried in front of Emperor Qinshihuang's elaborate tomb (221-207 BC) to defend him in the afterlife. Revered as a forward-thinking leader who initiated agricultural reforms and massive public works projects, he was also despised as a tyrant who sacrificed Chinese laborers' lives to his ambitions.
