A Masterful Presentation of a Classic

Foote eighth and ninth graders are performing Charles Dickens's timeless story, "A Christmas Carol," in the Sandine Theater Thursday through Sunday. This classic interpretation is engaging, heartrending, and with a message that is as powerful today as it was in 19th century England. Click here for information on how to purchase roses for cast members at the performances (Roses will be sold in the lobby). Click here to order a DVD of the performance. Tickets are sold out!

Teaching Children the Art of Giving

As part of the Stuff-a-Sock community service project, the sixth grade homerooms of Deb Riding and Peter Ross are collecting items needed for basic comfort and hygiene, stuffing them into new pairs of tube socks and presenting the socks to needy adults at Columbus House, New Haven's largest homeless shelter.

We are asking each grade level to collect a specific item. If each student brings in two of the assigned item, we will be able to stuff 100 socks for our neighbors in need! Here are the assignments:

K: toothbrushes

MAG: hats and/or gloves (for men, women and children)

3rd: combs or brushes

4th: small tubes of toothpaste

5th: nail clippers

6th: chapsticks

7th: sticks of deodorant

8th: small containers of shaving cream

9th: small packs of tissues

Faculty and Staff: washcloths

We will collect the boxes on Mon., Dec. 12.  Thank you so much for your help on this project.

Laura Altshul and Dawn Walsh (community service); Deb Riding and Peter Ross (6X)

Be Part of Foote's Unite Through Understanding Day

We need YOU for Unite Through Understanding!

MOSAIC, the newly renamed Multicultural Affairs Committee, is currently planning a Unite Through Understanding Day to be held on Thurs., Feb. 16, 2012.  This all-day, all-grade event seeks to guide students in developing a deeper understanding and appreciation of other cultures, people and events in history.

We are seeking parents, faculty, staff members and outside volunteers to lead hands-on experiences or challenging workshops that celebrate diversity.  This can include performers and artists with interactive presentations that directly involve the children or people who can lead short programs that encourage students to grapple with sensitive or otherwise difficult issues. A few workshops may be limited to older grade students depending on subject matter.

Each workshop will run about an hour.  In past years, there has been a wide variety of offerings:
  • Songs of Social Protest
  • Living in Two Cultures
  • Gender in the Classroom and in Literature
  • Diversity in the Juvenile Court System
  • Poetry of Langston Hughes
  • Art Against Apartheid
  • Indian Dancing and Games
  • Native American Collage
  • Origami
This year, we have some thought-provoking and interesting workshops already in place:
  • Surviving the Holocaust by guest Judith Altmann
  • Girls and Body Image by science teacher Leslie Long
  • Understanding Adoption by math teacher and parent Cindy Raymond and past parent Lynn Gabbard
  • Henna Painting by parent Kiran Zaman
If you are interested in participating or you can arrange for a guest to visit Foote, please contact either parent Zehra Patwa at 203-804-3337 or faculty member Carol Poling. In the interest of time, space and student interest, we may not be able to accommodate all workshops, but we strive to present a good mix of discussion and hands-on activities for the children.

On the Subject of Giving...

snowmen

As the snow begins to fall and 2011 comes to a close, we ask you to please remember the Foote School Annual Fund in your year-end giving. Remember - every gift makes a difference!

You may give online, or send your contribution to

Fall Sports Awards

Students who played a fall sport are invited to the Fall Sports Awards (and Pizza) Assembly, from 3 to 4 p.m. Thurs., Dec. 15 in the Hosley Gym.

Swim Team News

Parents and Guardians of Swim Team Members:

At 3 p.m. Wed., Dec. 14, Metro Swim Shop will be at Foote to do fittings for team swimsuits. If the suits of those who swam last year still fit and are in good shape, use them! For new swimmers or swimmers in need of new suits, please print out this form and make sure you have it with you, along with a check for the correct amount made out to Metro Swim Shop.

Please note that Foote will again this year subsidize the cost of the suits making these a great value. You also have the option to purchase Foote swimming sweatpants. The school does not underwrite the cost of these.

Due to the fitting, we will not have practice that day.

Thanks in advance,

Alison Siefert and Sheila Lavey, Coaches

Ted Willis, Athletic Director
