Admissions Open House and Information Sessions

School has just started, but the Foote Admissions Office is already busy. The annual Fall Open House is Sun., Nov. 6 from 1-3 p.m.  No reservations needed. Please tell friends who may be interested.

The school holds a series of Parent Information Sessions on school days. See the Admissions page of the Foote website for the complete schedule.

Grandparents Day Updates

Grandparents Day invitations have been sent to many Foote grandparents and some special friends for those whose grandparents cannot attend. On Fri., Oct. 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., grandparents are invited to visit grandchildren's classes, take a minicourse or school tour, and enjoy an all-school assembly.

Invitations
If you'd like to invite a special friend or you didn't include grandparents' addresses on the student information form in your summer packet, please send the information to Maria Granquist in the Development Office, and we'll send an invitation directly. Please encourage your child's guests to RSVP early so we can prepare a schedule for their visit. Since we anticipate that more than 400 grandparents will attend, we cannot accommodate parent visitors to classes that day. Everyone is welcome at the assembly, of course!

Please Volunteer
Volunteers are needed on Grandparents Day to make the event run smoothly. Whether you can spare a few hours or the whole morning, we would appreciate your assistance welcoming grandparents, leading them to classes, arranging refreshments, and a host of other tasks. We'll hold an orientation session for anyone who would like to know more about the campus. And if October 14 isn't a good day for you to volunteer, please come to help set up in the Hosley Gym on Thurs., Oct. 13 between 12:30 and 3 pm.

E-mail Maria Granquist if you are able to volunteer. It's a wonderful occasion, and you will enjoy being part of making it happen!

For Middle School Parents: Our New Digital Focus

Foote teachers have had great success using online digital tools to communicate and collaborate with each other, and we want Foote students to enjoy the same opportunities. We will focus on two particular skills: computer-mediated communication and online collaboration.

1. We are using Google Apps for Education to provide a productivity toolset that we will introduce to middle school groups this fall. The toolset enables students and teachers to collaborate on online documents, spreadsheets, presentations and more.

2. We also appreciate the need for our faculty to understand and work in the digital world of our students (friending, messaging, blogs, wikis, feeds, etc.). To this end, we will be piloting a safe and controlled online learning environment (OLE!) in the sixth grade technology and yearbook classes. Using a "walled garden" approach, Foote OLE! will allow students to develop their online communication and collaboration skills in a safe, fun, and educational environment.

To facilitate and coordinate these exciting projects, Foote now has two full-time Technology Curriculum Specialists - Laurie Bartels and Peter Ross - who will work with students to ensure they have the tools and expertise they need to build their positive online presence. To learn more about these wonderful new initiatives, please contact  Laurie Bartels,  Peter Ross, Mike McCabe, or me.

News on Snacks

Foote is now providing healthy snacks for students every day. This means that parents no longer need to provide a Tuesday snack for their child's class. We want to sincerely thank Cristina Baiocco and the PTC for the Healthy Snack Program that has been so successful the past several years. As in the past, parents who wish to provide a special snack to their child's class are welcome to do so. Please check with your child's teacher in advance.

Who Are Those Mysterious Individuals in Security Vests?

They are our Morning Greeters on Loomis Place, Foote students who are responsible for walking children to their classrooms. They help traffic flow smoothly, and are a welcoming and fun presence for younger Foote children.

For 8th & 9th Grade Parents:  Secondary School Meetings

Assistant Middle School Head Liam Considine invites the parents of current eighth and ninth graders to meet with him to discuss secondary school plans for their children. Please contact Becky McGuire to arrange an appointment. Please note that any students applying out must submit forms to Becky's office and recommendations to their math and English teachers by Thurs., Nov. 23. For more information, contact Liam Considine.

A Special Assembly

Wang Manchun, our Chinese guest teacher, was introduced Wed., Sept. 14 at an All School Assembly. Foote's mascot, Falco, also made an energetic guest appearance. Following Foote tradition, ninth graders bestowed stuffed falcons upon kindergartners, much to the younger children's delight.
