Wine Quiz:
True or False?
During Prohibition, hard alcohol was prohibited but wine was freely permitted.
Answer:
False!
- During Prohibition (from 1920-1933), all alcohol, including wine, was prohibited. The exceptions were wine for medicinal or religious consumption, or for the personal use of families who made their own. Families were allowed to make a hefty amount - up to 200 gallons a year!
N.B - On a special note, one of our viewers also added in to the response "... some of the producers of 'religious' wine made their fortune on this technicality..."

Gold Medal Winners!! "...Best of the Best..."
"Join
us this weekend as we celebrate the Olympic Spirit by sampling four Gold Medal
Winning Wines!!! The results of the 2009 All Canadian Wine Championships are
out and these are the Best of the Best.
We will begin with the 2007 Lang
Vineyards Farm Reserve Riesling ($19.90). This not only won Double Gold as the
best of its category, it was awarded the Trophy for Best White Wine of
the Year! It is dry, spicy and crisp with typical fresh fruit flavours and will
age gracefully for eight to ten years.
Next is the Gold Medal
Winning
2007 Township 7 Chardonnay ($19.99). Barrel fermented and
aged in French and American oak barrels, this wine displays aromas and flavours
of apples and peaches along with nuances of vanilla, butterscotch, coconut,
hazelnut, and nutmeg. It is a well-balanced wine with some nice creaminess on
the finish.
The Gold Medal Winning 2006 See Ya Later
Ranch Pinot Noir ($21.99) was barrel aged for 18 months in 100%
French oak. It
has aromas of
strawberry, cherry and vanilla followed by flavours of bright, red fruit and a
soft, round mouthfeel. Finally we will sample the Double Gold Medal - Best of Category winning 2007 Church & State Cabernet Merlot
($21.90). This blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot has aromas of
cedar, dried herbs and smoke followed by flavours of leather, cherry and mint.
