Gray Monk~!!
2010-01-29 WD

"...green apples and squeeze of fresh lime..."

" Join us beginning Tuesday as we sample the 2006 Gray Monk Riesling ($16.99). This wine is lively and fresh on the palate, with flavours of green apples and squeeze of fresh lime. The clean, tangy finish is persistent and the wine is very food friendly.

See You Here!"

Wine Quiz:

True or False?

During Prohibition, hard alcohol was prohibited but wine was freely permitted.

Answer:

False!

- During Prohibition (from 1920-1933), all alcohol, including wine, was prohibited.  The exceptions were wine for medicinal or religious consumption, or for the personal use of families who made their own.  Families were allowed to make a hefty amount - up to 200 gallons a year!

Weekend Tasting!!
Sandhill!!

2010-01-29 WE

"...87% Petite Verdot, 5% Malbec and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon..."

"Join us this weekend as we sample the wines of Sandhill Estate winery.Sandhill works with grapes from four distinct Okanagan vineyards, and seeks to capture the individual qualities of each site.

We will begin with the 2008 Pinot Gris ($18.99) from the King Family Vineyard. The King Family Vineyard is located in a cooler area of the Okanagan close to Naramata. The resulting wine is fresh and edgy with a certain liveliness. Aromas and flavours suggest apple, pear, pineapple and citrus.

The 2007 Sandhill Estate Vineyard Pinot Blanc ($16.99) is next. This wine is a lemon yellow colour with an aromatic nose of pineapple, melon and spicy oak leading to similar flavours accented by mineral notes on the finish. This wine won Double Gold at the All Canadian Wine Championships.

The 2007 Sandhill Estate Vineyard Merlot ($19.99) is grown up against the cliffs to reflect the intense heat back to the vines. The resulting full-bodied wine has aromas and flavours of plum, blueberry, blackberry and spice with round but firm tannins.

A final treat is the 2006 Small Lots Phantom Creek Vineyard Petite Verdot ($29.99). This actually contains 87% Petite Verdot, 5% Malbec and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. This medium-bodied wine shows flavours of Bing cherry, cedar, blackberry and a touch of smoke on the finish. Sandhill was recently named Wine Access Magazine Winery of the Year!
