Spotlight on...! Community YMCA of Northern Westchester

The Community YMCA has been meeting community needs for the past 13 years. With Learning Centers and School Age Programs, the Community YMCA provides high-quality, affordable child care options. The incorporation of the YMCA core values of caring, respect, responsibility and honesty makes their programs a positive environment for children of every age. Their full-time staff of directors and teachers carefully creates programs that provide children the opportunities to learn new skills, develop lasting relationships and build self-esteem.

The Community YMCA School-Age child care programs are designed to help children in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade to develop to their fullest potential. Through carefully planned activities, children build confidence as well as enhance social and physical skills. Their school age programs could not run without the staff of positive role models. As a non-facility YMCA, programming is run in local school buildings as they find that schools are great locations because of the flexibility of available space (cafeteria, gym, playground, outside fields) and storage space they afford.  Their programs service children in the following four school districts:  Mahopac, North Salem, Pleasantville and Somers.  Many programs also provide a quiet homework time when children can complete school assignments and offer specialized art programs such as fimo sculpting, wood burning, mosaics and paper mache.

The North Salem YMCA after school programs held their 13th Annual Talent Show Event on Thursday February 4th. 75 of the 85 enrolled students participated!  Students ages 5 to 12 sang, danced, told jokes and performed in skits. A  Michael Jackson tribute dance involving 31 children from grades K, 3, 4, 5 and 6 was choreographed.  Some students memorized lines for the "Brady Bunch" skit, which also involved learning two dances.  Kids were dressed like a shark, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Idol, Ozzy Osbourne and Kanye West. There were cooking shows, "Dancing with the Wannabees", and so much more!  The dances involved all different age groups and all different genres of music including Kelly Clarkson, Rascal Flatts, Rhianna, Taylor Swift, Fabulous, Miley Cyrus, Barry Manilow and N'sync.  They even parodied the Taylor Swift acceptance speech at the "MTV Video Awards" and "The Jersey Shore".  The parents really enjoyed all of the performances and were rewarded by being photographed by the Journal News for the Sunday Edition.  The kids deserved this recognition for their commitment to their performances.  As Sally Stroka, Program Director at North Salem stated "I am so very proud to be a part of this program and this community!"
