Many nonprofits struggle to create a fundraising plan and put it in writing, yet the benefits are tremendous. A written plan shifts you from being reactive and dealing with the crisis of the day to being proactive and working purposefully toward the results you want. In this session, you'll learn how to follow 6 simple steps to put together a written plan for raising the money you need in the coming year. We'll cover goal setting (using SMART goals), action plans and ways to keep your plan on track, plus you'll get some worksheets and checklists that will make the process easy.

Designed for entry to mid-level practitioners, volunteers and board members.

This webinar can only be accessed at the Manistee Intermediate School District Building, Conference Room B or in Traverse City at Northwestern Michigan College University Center Room 5

As nonprofits are challenged to become more innovative and diversified in their fundraising strategies, good old fashioned grants remain a common-and important-source of revenue. However, the growth of the nonprofit sector and the fragility of the economy raise new questions and challenges for grant seekers. When pushed to do more with less, nonprofits need to work smarter, not harder, in order to be successful in grant seeking.

During this session, participants will explore the four primary reasons grant proposals are declined including which elements are within your control and what is simply out of your hands (not much!). We'll analyze the twelve points that foundations commonly use to evaluate grant requests, and we'll discuss the Grant Seekers Top 10 (habits, systems and strategies that are often overlooked). Then we'll spend some time creating a personal action plan that will help you build all of these critical elements into your grant-seeking culture.

Beyond the theory of good proposal development, we'll also spend some time on best practices: the importance of validating your needs, identifying key partners for collaboration, and your ability to measure and demonstrate change. We'll talk about what to write, how to write, and where to go for help.  But we'll also talk about how to identify and focus your time on the most likely funders of your project, allowing you to be more efficient AND effective.

Designed for entry to mid level practitioners.

IRS Launches New Online Search Tool

The IRS launched a new online search tool, Exempt Organizations Select Check, to help users more easily find information about tax-exempt organizations. Users can now go to one location  http://apps.irs.gov/app/eos/ on IRS.gov to search for:

  1. Organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions (formerly listed in electronic Publication 78). Users may rely on this list in determining deductibility of contributions, just as they did with Pub. 78

  2. Organizations whose federal tax exemption automatically revoked for not filing a Form 990-series return or notice for three consecutive years (Auto-Revocation List) Form 990-N (e-Postcard) filers and their submissions
