This session will examine how nonprofit governance is changing in order to address intensifying and complex social, legislative and economic demands.  We will discuss the changing requirements for serving on a board, how to be an effective board member and build a "best practicing" board and how exceptional nonprofit boards are responding to and positioning for a changing environment. We will discuss organizational lifecycle stages and implications for the Board and management team's roles and responsibilities. Nonprofit Finance Fund (www.nonprofitfinancefund.org) is conducting its fourth annual nationwide survey examining the current state of the nonprofit sector from a financial perspective, and we hope that you will add your voice. The findings, and the comparison to previous years' findings, will help identify the most critical areas of need in the nonprofit sector.

 

The survey, which is anonymous and takes only 10-15 minutes to fill out, collects data on important financial and management issues facing the nonprofit sector. (View previous year's findings and media attention here.

Please include your zipcode to provide regional specific findings. Results will be shared in late March. Also, all survey respondents that choose to give their contact information will receive the results directly. The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) is excited to announce they are now seeking nominations for the 2012 Governor's Service Awards. These awards are given annually by the Governor to acknowledge individuals, organizations, and businesses that are committed to service and volunteerism in their communities.

 

The 2012 Governor's Service Awards nomination form is available for download on the MCSC's website at www.michigan.gov/volunteer. A hard copy of the nomination form is also available and can be obtained by contacting the MCSC at (517) 335-4295.

 

Nominations for the Governor's Service Awards must be postmarked by Thursday, March 1, 2012. New this year, nominations will also be accepted electronically at GSA@michigan.gov. Electronic materials should be submitted by the March 1 deadline and should be formatted as PDF files, with the exception of photos which should be in JPEG format.

Managing risk for a nonprofit requires more than simply keeping insurance policies current. Participants will learn the wide range of elements that comprise risk for a nonprofit including financial, human resources, governance, control, and volunteers. We will discuss the major area of risks for nonprofits, how to review and assess the organization's level of risk, what standard practices should be in place to routinely ensure that the nonprofit minimizes its exposure. We will review an integrated framework for preventing and managing risk and how to create a culture that
