Nonprofit Start-Up Legal Assistance Clinic 

 

Community Legal Resources (CLR) is seeking a limited number of eligible, emerging nonprofit organizations for placement in the Fall 2011 Wayne State University Small Business Enterprises and Nonprofit Law School Clinic. This clinic will provide free legal assistance for new organizations applying for 501c3 federal tax-exempt status. The deadline is August 22 at 5 pm. Learn more.


 

What's in Your Toolbox to Partner with Social Entrepreneurs?


There are potential benefits to both nonprofit organizations and new social entrepreneurs to combine forces according to Debbie McKeon, Northsky Executive Director, in her latest article published in the May/June issue of the Michigan Nonprofit Association's Links magazine. In her article, Debbie presents several situations where a fiscal sponsorship agreement may be a good tool to utilize. To read more, see page 7 of MNA Links .

 

Did Your Organization Lose its Tax-exempt Status because It Failed to File?


The IRS recently published Notice 2011-43 giving relief to small nonprofits to reinstate their tax exempt status if they lost it due to failure to file the 990 for three consecutive years. The user fee is $100 and an application (1023, 1024, 1028) will need to be resubmitted by December 31, 2012. There are certain criteria and applications must have certain language included. Check the IRS website (www.irs.gov) for 2011-43 for the full details.

IRS Increases Mileage Rates


Last week the IRS announced that the revised standard mileage rates have increased due to rising fuel costs. For business use of an automobile, the rate increased to 55.5 cents per mile and for use of an automobile as a medical or moving expense, the rate went up to 23.5 cents. The mileage rate for use of an automobile for charitable purposes (fixed by statute and unchanged since 1997) remains at 14 cents. Read more.
