Those are the programs with plenty of volunteers who stay around for a long time and perform a vast array of tasks throughout the organization. They are the organizations with enthusiastic and energetic volunteers from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We will spend the day reviewing the best practices of exceptional volunteer programs, including how they recruit, manage, develop, and retain their volunteers. We will also review the role technology and systems play in volunteer management and how to work with the “non traditional” volunteer. COSA Amendment Signed by Governor! Exciting News! On December 22, the bill that makes some much needed revisions to the Charitable Organizations and Solicitation Act (COSA) was signed by Governor Granholm. This legislation, one of the Nonprofit Caucus’ legislative priorities, will benefit Michigan’s nonprofit community by weeding out bad actors that are “charities” in name only. Among other things, this legislation will increase the fines and punishments for those organizations and individuals that purposely violate the provisions in the act, in order to protect the nonprofit community from fraudulent activities. Hestia Women’s Giving Circle Announces Funding Availability Are you part of an organization in Emmet and Charlevoix seeking funding for projects that help local women and girls? The Hestia Women’s Giving Circle is welcoming applications for its third grant cycle. Applications are due February 1, and grants will be awarded by May. Organizations applying for grants must have 501(c)3 non-profit status or be a school or government agency, or have a fiscal agent with non-profit status. The Giving Circle is a donor-advised fund of the Charlevoix County Community Foundation (CCCF) which also assists the Giving Circle in grant making and distribution. Applications will be available on the Foundation’s website at www.c3f.org. Potential applications should call Maureen Radke at CCCF at (231) 536-2440 in advance.
Traverse City Light & Power is Currently Accepting Grant Applications Traverse City Light & Power’s (L&P) Community Investment Fund is currently accepting grant applications until February 1, 2011, for the winter grant period. Funds are generally awarded to non-profit organizations or groups for specific educational, environmental and community development purposes. The requesting organization must reside in the Traverse City area, be nonprofit (i.e. be exempt from federal income tax under the Internal Revenue Code) and operate for public purposes.
