AUGUST IS NATIONAL WATER QUALITY MONTH
When it comes to city water use, Utah uses about 293 gallons per person per day. This is the second highest amount in the nation. Of course, Utah is the second driest state in the nation. Because Utah is a desert we need to use our water wisely. Here are a few tips that you can use to save water.

WATER CONSERVATION TIPS

waterteeth
By turning off the water while we brush our teeth or shave we can save up to 10 gallons a day

waterflushStop using the toilet as a waste basket. Everytime you flush a spider, facial tissue or some other small bit of trash down the toilet, you waste 3-7 gallons of water.

waterwashingmachine
Wash only full loads of laundry. Most washers use between 30 and 45 gallons per load. That's a lot of water for three tee-shirts.

watercarwashDon't run the hose while washing the car. Soap down the car with a pail of soapy water. Then use the hose to rinse it off.

HARVESTING RAINWATER
waterrainwaterRainwater harvesting is now legal in the state of Utah, starting May 11 2010. Senate Bill 32 provides for the collection and use of precipitation without obtaining a water right.Storage is limited to one underground 2500 gallon container or two above ground 100 gallon containers. Collection and use are limited to the same parcel of land owned or leased by the rainwater collector.

DID YOU KNOW...
waterearth1There is the same amount of water on earth as there was when the earth was formed. The water that came from your faucet could contain molecules that Neanderthals drank.

The overall amount of water on our planet has remained the same for two billion years.

waterdropIn a 100-year period, a water molecule spends 98 years in the ocean, 20 months as ice, about 2 weeks in lakes and rivers, and less than a week in the atmosphere.

Groundwater can take a human lifetime just to traverse a mile

If all the world's water were fit into a gallon jug, the fresh water available for us to use would equal only about one tablespoon.

  • Put food coloring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into the toilet bowl without flushing, you have a leak. Fixing it can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.
  • Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street.
  • For hanging baskets, planters and pots, place ice cubes under the moss or dirt to give your plants a cool drink of water and help eliminate water overflow.
  • If your shower fills a one-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds, replace the showerhead with a water-efficient model.
