CONGRATULATIONS TO Ray Clayton, who won a $50.00 Gift Certificate to Applebee's Restaurant for correctly answering our question from last month's newsletter.
THE QUESTION WAS: Prior to the invention of "roofs" there was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This was especially problematic in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up a clean bed. A sheet was draped over the bed held up by large posts. WHAT TYPE OF BED IS THIS KNOWN AS TODAY?
ANSWER: A Canopy Bed. | |

| DEEP FRYING A TURKEY |
Proponents of deep fried turkey claim that this cooking method produces a very flavorful, moist turkey. However, deep frying a turkey can be very dangerous if not done properly. For more information, recipes, and safety tips, click on this link: Deep Frying a Turkey |
| HOLIDAY LIGHTING |
Turn off all lights before going to bed or leaving the house, as lights can short out and start a fire. Inspect new and previously used light strings, and replace them if they're damaged or worn.
Do not link more than three light strands, unless the directions indicate it is safe
|
| TAKE CARE WITH CANDLES |
Be careful when burning candles, and be sure to keep them away from decorations or other combustible materials. Don't leave children unattended in a room with lit candles, and always keep candles, matches, and lighters out of their reach. Never use lit candles as tree decorations. |
| KEEP AN EYE ON POINSETTIAS |
Poinsettia plants are known to be poisonous to humans and animals, so keep them out of reach, or avoid having them in your house if you have pets or young children.
|
| WATCH THE STOVE |
Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the United States. When cooking for holiday visitors, remember to keep an eye on the range. |
| METALLIC TREES |
Also, Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty lights, and any person touching a branch could be electrocuted!
To avoid this danger, use colored spotlights above or beside a metallic tree, never fastened onto it.
