Edmonton, AB - The Greater Edmonton Skeptic Society in partnership with TELUS World of Science - Edmonton is excited to present LogiCON 2012, a locally-grown weekend-long event celebrating science, logic and critical thinking.
Between Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15, over 21 speakers from various backgrounds will present on a variety of topics. Designed with accessibility in mind, LogiCON features topics including black holes, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, forensic anthropology, non-Euclidean geometry, the effect of video games on our brains, endangered species monitoring and management, dark matter, how to read the news with a critical eye, dinosaurs, energy and the Alberta oil sands, the future of foods, and the science of superpowers.
LogiCON evolved into a weekend-long event which brings members of the local science community together with the general public to celebrate logic, critical thinking and the scientific method. Hosted at TELUS World of Science - Edmonton, LogiCON will include tracks geared to all levels of science interest, from the longtime science enthusiast to the curious beginner. Events will include short presentations, kid-friendly hands-on activities, discussion panels and science workshops.
The "beginner" track is jargon free zone created to introduce critical thinking skills and get people thinking about how the scientific method applies to their everyday life. Sessions in this track touch on topics such as applying critical thinking to reading the news, forensic anthropology, and endangered species management and monitoring.
The "advanced" track has been built for the everyday science enthusiast looking to build on a solid base of fundamental science knowledge, and will feature lecture style presentations, workshops and panel discussions. Learn about dark matter, non-Euclidian geometry, the science of superpowers, and the psychology of magic.
LogiCON also has a variety of interactive kid-friendly family activities going on throughout the day designed to engage young minds from every angle, encouraging children of all ages to build strong critical thinking skills. Some of the fantastic activities include science experiments and demonstrations to a science panel of kids from Grades 4 to 6.
