Funding Announcement Provides Support for
New Exhibit Gallery at TELUS World of Science - Edmonton.
Edmonton, AB - George Smith, President and CEO of TELUS World of Science - Edmonton announced today it has broken ground on a new Exhibit Gallery. The 16,000 square foot addition and connecting walkway, designed by Dialog and being built by Chandos Construction, will provide a much needed venue to better accommodate travelling exhibitions.
The Gallery will connect to the east side of the existing building just north of its main entrance. This new Gallery is Phase 1 of the Edmonton Space & Science Foundation's Vision 20/20 Master Plan, construction of this Gallery will be complete for the opening of STAR WARS™ Identities: The Exhibition in October 2012.
"We are extremely pleased to have received the support from both levels of government towards this $7 million expansion." said George Smith, President and CEO, TELUS World of Science - Edmonton. The Honourable Alison Redford, Premier, Government of Alberta formally announced the province's support in the amount of $3.0 million and His Worship Stephen Mandel, Mayor, City of Edmonton announced the City's support for $3.5 million. The remaining amount of $500,000 has been raised by the Edmonton Space & Science Foundation through contributions from individuals and corporations throughout the community, as well as from gate proceeds.
"This support from the Province of Alberta and the City of Edmonton is vital to the successful future of TELUS World of Science - Edmonton and will allow us to continue to make a significant contribution to innovation in Alberta for many years to come. The expansion will allow us to attract blockbuster traveling exhibitions, such as STAR WARS™ Identities, to Edmonton and Alberta. In fact, being able to assure blockbuster exhibit developers we have proper space to host their exhibitions has already helped us sign two other major exhibitions for TELUS World of Science - Edmonton: BODY WORLDS, The Cycle of Life, will open on May 25, 2013; and, Indiana Jones and the Adventures of Archaeology, will open on November 1, 2014. It would not have been possible to secure either of these exhibitions without this expansion." said George Smith, President and CEO, TELUS World of Science - Edmonton.
