EMOTIONAL NEW IMAX FILM FOCUSES ON DISASTER RESPONSE

Rescue, to open on October 8 in IMAX at TELUS World of Science - Edmonton

Edmonton, AB - Rescue plunges audiences into the hard work of saving lives in the face of a natural disaster. Behind the scenes, the film follows a Canadian naval commander, two pilots, and volunteer rescue technician as they train for action. When an earthquake strikes Haiti, creating one of the biggest humanitarian disasters of the century, the audience is swept along, joining with the massive effort that brings military and civilian responders and hardware from around the world.

The latest IMAX film from award-winning Montreal-based director, Stephen Low, Rescue immerses audiences in the training and mindsets of individuals who answer the call of those in need, and at the same time, brings home the vital importance of organized global response to natural disasters. Rescue is an epic journey of hope in the world of disaster and emergency response captured in IMAX and delivered with unprecedented scale and impact on the giant screen. This film, which opens at TELUS World of Science - Edmonton on October 8, can be seen several times daily.

Rescue highlights the Canadian Navy, which spearheaded Canada's response to Haiti disaster(named Operation HESTIA) with two ships dispatched from Halifax (HMCS Athabaskan and HMCS Halifax). Also shown in the film are members of Canada's DART (Disaster Assistance Response Team), a unit of about 200 Canadian Forces personnel tasked to respond rapidly to major disasters.

The disaster in Rescue is the very real 2010 Haiti earthquake. Low's production team was in the midst of production on the 42-minute Rescue big screen documentary whe the quake struck the populos Caribbean nation in January 2010. Quickly arranging permissions and access to the stricken area, the crew arrived with their huge cameras weighting as much as 150-pounds in tow. From the ground and from the air, they captured scenes that were both heart-wrenching and heartening-some of the first real-time disaster coverage ever shot with an IMAX camera.
