TELUS World of Science - Edmonton
Provides opportunity for students to
Chat with an Astronaut aboard the
International Space Station
Edmonton, AB -- On July 20, at approximately 9:24 a.m. as the International Space Station (ISS) moves over Edmonton, it becomes reachable by amateur radio in Edmonton with a 10 to 15 minute window. Twelve students from the University of Alberta Space Academy program and from the TELUS World of Science Summer Camp will have the opportunity to talk by ham radio with NASA Astronaut Michael E. Fossum, as the ISS passes overhead traveling at 28 thousand kilometers per hours. Astronaut Fossum arrived onboard the ISS on June 9, 2011 and is due to return to Earth on November 2011. Currently onboard the ISS as part of Expedition 28 are three NASA Astronauts, two Cosmonauts and one JAXA Astronaut.
TELUS World of Science - Edmonton is taking part in this opportunity allowing these students to speak with an astronaut for a few minutes using amateur radio. This program is operated by the Amateur Radio on the International Space Stations (ARISS), with support from the Radio Amateur of Canada and the Northern Alberta Radio Club.
The general public is invited to come and hear the conversations between the students and the astronaut as it is happening in outer space. Recommending that everyone arrive by 9:15 a.m., the event will take place in out Observatory.
NOTE: time and location subject to change due to any changes in the orbiting path for the ISS.
FUN FACT: July 20 also marks the 42nd Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing.
