LogiCON 2011 Science and Critical Thinking Event at
TELUS World of Science - Edmonton on Saturday, April 9.

Edmonton, AB -- The Greater Edmonton Skeptic Society in partnership with TELUS World of Science - Edmonton is excited to present LogiCON 2011, a locally-grown daylong event celebrating science, logic and critical thinking.

On Saturday, April 9, over 15 speakers from various backgrounds will present on a variety of topics. Designed with accessibilitiy in mind, LogiCon features three tracks of presentations and a keynote presentation by youth science author and illustrator Daniel Loxton.

LogiCON is a daylong event bringing members of the local science community together with the general public to celebrate logic, critical thinking and the scientific method. Hosted at TELUS World of Science - Edmonton, LogiCON will include tracks geared to all levels of science interest, from the longtime science enthusiast to the curious beginner. Events will include short presentations, kid-friendly hands-on activities, discussion panels and science workshops on topics such as vaccinations, astronomy,  the history of science, alternative medicine, science parenting and pseudosciences.

Keynote speaker Daniel Loxton will share the tale of how he travelled the path from a youthful, passionate belief in the paranormal to science advocate and enthusiast. Join Loxton as he goes back in time to when he discovered the exsitence of specialized "skeptical" literature that  uses science and scholorship to solve spooky mysteries from alien abductions to haunted houses. Discover the enthusiasm and love of mystery that unites paranormal believers and scientist as they both search for the truth.

The "beginner" track is jargon free zone created to introduce critical thinking skills and get people thinking about how the scientific method applies to their everyday life. Sessions in this track touch on topics such as spotting bogus consumer products, pseudoscience, awareness of alternative health practices and the science behind vaccinations.

Our "advanced" track has been built for the everyday science enthusiast looking to build on a solid base of fundamental science knowledge, and will feature lecture style presentations, workshops and panel discussions. Learn the difference between correlation and causation, hear expert and amateur magicians discuss how their trade makes them better critical thinkers, and learn more about the Big Bang.

LogiCON also has a variety of interactive kid-friendly activities going on throughout the day designed to engage young minds from every angle, encouraging children of all ages to build strong critical thinking skills. From science experiments and demonstrations to magic tricks, our kids' activities are fun and hands-on.

The only cost associated with LogiCON is a General Admission ticket into TELUS World of Science - Edmonton ($16.95 for adults, $13.95 for youth and students +GST) the day of the event. All LogiCON presentations, workshops and events - including the keynote presentation by Daniel Loxton - are free as part of the General Admission ticket.
