Root River Galloways

Brad and Leslea Hodgson, owners of Root Prairie Galloways invite you to a pasture walk on Wednesday, August 15th at 3:30 pm.
The Hodgsons practice a number of conservation techniques on their grazing beef farm. The pasture walk includes the opportunity to hear a well known local grazing expert discuss management of Big Bluestem warm season native prairie grasses.
This pasture walk is part of a SARE grant. The Hodgsons and Howard Moechnig of Midwest Grasslands are looking at the effects of grazing, specifically in the early spring on cool season grasses and weeds.will be speaking about the experiment, so if you are interested in warm season native grasses please plan to attend.
and along with Howard Moechnig we Because we manage our farm organically we are looking for alternatives to spraying with herbicides. Big Bluestem is a valuable grass and we are trying to make it work economically, besides environmentally on a beef grazing farm. We have already grazed it twice this season, May and July, and with two different classes of livestock. Having nearly no rain for two months it will be interesting to see how well it can re grow for a possible graze once more in September.

Wayne, creator of Root River Lures
We are lucky in SE Minnesota where we have both warm water and spring-fed streams. While the unusually warm weather has been tough on the trout fishing, it has really improved the smallmouth bass fishing. It's one of my favorite times of the year where I shed my waders, slip into a pair of shorts and wading sandals and head into the water. It's cool and refreshing, but is also one of the best times of the year to catch smallmouth bass. Towards the end of July a friend and myself played hookie from work in the afternoon. We spent five hours on the Root River, landing 35 smallmouth bass. Most were in the 6" to 10"range, but we caught 2 16" smallies that topped off the day. Now this wouldn't be an article from Root River Lure if I didn't plug one of our lures! The lure of the day was our trout/smallmouth spinner, with a #4 Indiana hammered brass blade and #6 red treble hook. I know this is a popular spinner, since it is the one I need to restock the most. Have a great month of August fishing and get ready for some spectacular Fall fishing starting in September. Hope to see you on the streams! Wayne
