Season's Greetings!

Please Help

Lanesboro Local

Achieve our Goals

In the spirit of giving, help us help our local community by making a donation in any amount. You will become a supporting member of Lanesboro Local and be part of achieving our dream of fostering local foods and goods.

Lanesboro Local is designed to be self sufficient with our Marketplace, and we have been amazingly successful. Over a hundred local producers are making a profit and thousands of shoppers are supporting our message to "Live Local - Live Well." The Marketplace is doing great.

However, we need additional funds to achieve our full mission. Generous grants have enabled our program staff to educate the public and expand the local economy. They organize cooking classes, help producers earn more income, organize participation in community events, and promote Lanesboro Local to customers and the media. What they do is precisely what allows us to grow.

We have come to a break in our grants, and do not have funds available over the winter months to keep program staff working at the level we need. Our immediate challenge is to cover a funding gap while a number of submitted grant proposals are considered. Here is where you, our faithful supporters, come in.

Lanesboro Local
is the little store with a great mission that could ... go further... with your help! We need you to make a contribution in any amount you can. Your tax deductible donation will help meet our goal of raising $9,000 to sustain Lanesboro Local.

Contributions can be made in any amount, either directly at the store, or by following this link. Please contact us if you have any questions or suggestions. (info@lanesborolocal.org.)

I believe

that when people reach out to support and encourage each other that the fabric of community is strengthened.

I believe

that within each community there are talented, caring people that are eager to share what they know and have with others.

I believe

that if we can find creative ways

to live locally that we have a better quality of life.

It is for these reasons and many more that I believe

that Lanesboro Local is a valuable asset to not only this community but to the larger community in serving as an example of how to live

sustainable.

Creations from Downhome,  Brett Bergan: Living in the country, one sees many rolls of discarded barb wire. How could this wire be recycled? Creations from Downhome, my company, gives new life to barbed wire.  Seasonal and objects for horse-lovers and farmers are among of the decorations made.

A successful farmer is ... prepared

Before you jump into buying a herd of animals (or seeds, etc), take some time to look at the big picture. Find out what it takes and where you want to go with it. Unless you are blessed with a great influx of start up funds and magic farming wisdom/luck you will start out with a small farm just like 92% of all farms in the U.S. with a gross income of less than $250,000. Nonetheless, your lifestyle permits you to be outside, care for the land and/or animals and make a difference in your community. Statistically, as small farmers you spend 75% of your money locally thus supporting local business (compared to the population as a whole which spends 54% locally).

Fortunately, many resources such as the Extension Service or other farmers in the area are helpful stepping stones. For a head start take some of these characteristics of successful farmers, identified by Ron Macher, farmer, editor, and publisher of Small Farm Today, to heart:

  • Be Open minded.
  • Farming goals are family goals.
  • Must be profitable to be sustainable.
  • Big picture versus band-aid thinkers .
  • Not ashamed to think, practicing agripreneurs.
  • Avoid debt.
  • Have business plan and mission statement.
  • Avid readers looking for new ideas.
  • Production system balances labor and resources, doesn't overload them.
  • Keeps good records and knows production costs.
  • Diversified.
  • Year around income from farm products.
  • Products and production are sound economically, environmentally, and socially.
  • Find niche markets. Do not attempt to compete on a commodity basis.
And one more essential: Love farming -  with all its unpredictable moments.

Tis' the Season of Giving Healthy Foods...

To the Food Shelf

A little goes a long way and it's easy... pick up an extra item in the grocery store and give it to a food shelf. At the Marketplace we have a designated food shelf basket, where you can just leave any non-perishable item and we take it to the Preston Food Shelf when it's filled! How easy it is to do something good.

Not sure what to add? Check out this link for a list of healthy nonperishable foods

Practice Thanksgiving

DELICOUSLY INSPIRING POTLUCK & DOCUMENTARY MOVIE EVENT

by Kitty Baker

What a turn-out! The Practice Thanksgiving and Green Fire documentary made a perfect finale for the local Food & Film Series. The Food & Film project, sponsored by the Lanesboro Arts Center and Lanesboro Local Marketplace, finished its year-long series with a great gathering of thoughtful people from near and far bearing the most beautiful, delicious and original potluck dishes any potluck goer could imagine: mushroom pate with apple peel chutney, raw apple bread, scalloped kohlrabi, yam-sweet potato salad, spicy vegetarian rice & beans/spinach, sweet brazed chard with toasted black walnuts, smoked turkey/arugula/wild rice salad, strawberry compote over rich almond cake slices, browned-butter-frosted squash cookies with hemp seed/black walnuts, pumpkin pudding smothered in Kappers whipped cream, maple syrup pecan pie, to list just a few - lots and lots of real local ingredients.

Richard Wolfgramm (photo) arrived with his famous Pecan Tart in hand. It was the first dessert to disappear entirely - sweet, salty, nutty bliss. He was the inspiration for the Practice Thanksgiving, a tradition Wolfgramm invented years ago to begin the feasting early and include friends and neighbors who wouldn't be at his actual Thanksgiving Day table.
In addition to gourmet food, the Green Fire movie was a fine way to get into a thankful frame of mind. The film was a biographical account of the life and work of Aldo Leopold, who paved the way, beginning almost a century ago, for today's conservation movement. The film was followed by a short discussion led by Paul Johnson, Director of the Iowa DRN and former Chief of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Just the right authority to speak on conservation issues, Johnson appears in the film. He brought his family along, including daughter and granddaughter all the way form Sweden so they could see his work and share his moment of fame.

A COMMUNITY EFFORT MADE THE DOCUMENTARY SERIES POSSIBLE.
A big round of thanks all who helped make the films possible. The Lanesboro Arts Center offered the use of the St. Mane Theatre for the showing of the films and helped wiht planning and promoting the events. Lanesboro Local supported film nights with local food sampling. Bill Swanson, House Manager for film nights, purchased film rights and made up the difference between showing fees and donations. Loni Kemp and Bill Swanson for helping line up discussion leaders:
    * TROUBLED WATERS - Loni Kemp, talk leader on local conservation and the farm bill.
    * DIRT! - Frank Wright for sharing his knowledge of soil fertility.
    * INGREDIENTS - Judy Lacey (U OF MN Extension Services), talk leader on nutrition and diet.
    * QUEEN OF THE SUN - bee expert John Bruihler for pitching in when beekeeper Dave Carlin was on emergency refrigeration repairs during the heat wave.
    * FLOW - David Williams, chair of the MN Conservation Partnership, insights to local water issues.
    * GREEN FIRE - Paul Johnson, knowledge of local conservation issues and heroes, including Aldo Leopold.

WATCH FOR ANOTHER FILM SERIES NEXT YEAR.

We plan to pull together another set of thought-provoking movies - meaningful entertainment that you may not easily find otherwise. Bill Swanson, Kitty Baker (planner and promotional writer on the film project) are looking for some very positive, uplifting titles for 2012. Your suggestions are welcome - contact
kittybaker@rootriverwilds.com or wswanson20@yahoo.com
Please watch for the 2012 movie nights and join us in supporting entertainment meant to start great conversation.
