Q. Typically, who is a CCAN Patient Voice Representative?
A. The typical patient voice representative is a cancer patient, cancer survivor or an immediate caregiver - in other words, someone with direct experience of the cancer journey. Representatives are those determined to lend an informed patient perspective whereever there is opportunity to do so and, where there isn't...work to create new ways to be heard.
Q. What about training opportunties?
A. CCAN knows firsthand how important it is for patient voice representatives to have a level of comfort when they engage in dialogue. We recognize the need for training - that is why we developed our self-guided CCAN e-Learning Program...we want to offer all the resources we can for effective patient engagement to take place.
Q. What does the e-Learning program really offer?
A. The tutorials in the first module provide background information on CCAN and the Canadian cancer care environment. They touch base on basic messages that should be delivered consistently by our team of patient voice representatives. The tutorials in the second module are designed to help representatives better understand, prepare for, execute and report on the kinds of assignments they are most often asked to undertake. Here is a glimpse into each module:
Module 1: Advancing Patient Interests
Introduction
CCAN Overview
Canada's Cancer Care Landscape
The Cancer "Experience Continuum"
Facilitating Change
Patient Voice Committee
The Role of Patient Voice Representatives
Key Messages to be conveyed by Patient Voice Representatives
Module 2: Fundamentals of Effective Representation

Building Relationships
Reporting and Follow-up
Q. Who will benefit from the e-Learning Program?
A. Although the Program is designed for CCAN patient voice representatives, much of the material will also be beneficial to other volunteers, patients and family members. While aimed primarily at new patient voice representatives, the e-Learning modules will also serve to refresh the skills of those more experienced. Sometimes, we can all benefit from a refresher of key messages!
Q. Where can I find the e-Learning Program?
A. The entire e-Learning Program is NOW AVAILABLE on the CCAN website: www.ccanceraction.ca. Here's the great news...the Program is offered FREE to all Canadians interested in strengthening their skills or learning new ones! Simply click on the e-Learning button on the top of the menu to get started!
BEHIND THE SCENES: The development of the e-Learning Program was led by the CCAN Patient Voice Committee, chaired by Diana Ermel. Many members of CCAN Members Council also contributed to the program and associated videos. CCAN wishes to gratefully acknowledge all who contributed.
