Greetings!

Welcome to the New Year! I'd like to congratulate our December Kumon Honor Roll students, listed below. Kumon determines Honor Roll quarterly, based on the student's grade and highest worksheet completed. If your student is on Honor Roll, please pick up your FREE bumper sticker at the Center so you can show how proud you are! If your child is not yet on honor roll and you would like to map out a plan to reach that achievement, please schedule a Parent/Instructor meeting with me.

Change has come! Please read about Kumon North America's Center Transformation Initiative (CTI) below. Fairfield and Steeplechase are the first Centers in Houston to institute this. Although sometimes change can be hard, I am sure you will see the same astounding benefits and come to appreciate it as much as I have.

Please Remember to Schedule Your Child's Kumon Sessions for Both Center Days

We have noted most of our students wish to attend between 10 and 11 on Saturdays, and 4:30 and 6 on weeknights. While I have maximized staffing for those peak hours, we are still limited by the number of seats in the Center and my ability to feel comfortable I am able to oversee each student beyond what my graders are doing. With too many students in the room, students fall between the cracks. I don't want this to happen to any student.

If you haven't scheduled both days (even if you normally attend only one) yet, please do so. If you would like to be on a wait list for the peak times, please let Sam and/or me know ASAP. Thanks for bearing with us! :)

Home Grading is Essential for Efficient Progress through the Program

Starting December 1, we will regretfully no longer be offering to grade your students' homework. We offered this on a experimental basis but have found that the forward progress of the students whose work is not graded has slowed to a standstill. Our percentage of Honor Roll students is dropping, and families are less engaged with their children's progress. Remember, when you home grade, your child will spend less time in each level, thus giving you great results faster for your child at a lower cost per level! Who wouldn't want to get more bang for their buck nowadays? We share with you a desire that each child reach his or her potential as soon as possible and it is very apparent that returning to a no-exceptions policy of home grading as set forth in the enrollment contract is the only way to ensure these exceptional results.

Center Transformation Initiative

(a/k/a Scheduling, and Where Did the Staples Go?)

Things are exciting at our Centers as we adopt the Center Transformation Initiative (CTI), the new program which was piloted last year by Kumon North America. While all Kumon Centers in North America will be required to adopt this program by year end, our Centers were the first in Houston to introduce them.

Key elements of this initiative you have seen already: all students are scheduled; they are seated all facing one direction; they are seated in the order in which they come in; the Early Learners (former Junior Kumon) are in the same room with the older students; students become more independent by retrieving their own work; and we no longer staple the work.

Although change is difficult, I have been very excited about what we have seen so far. Students are finishing their work much more efficiently at the Center, meaning the family doesn't have to wait as long for them. Removing the staples allows us to grade the work as they are doing it, catching problems early enough for us to adjust their work, and allowing them to start correcting their work as soon as they finish. Most importantly, it makes me feel as if I am much closer to each student and any issues they may have than I was before.

I am sure as you start to see the benefits of CTI, you will become as excited as I. In the interim, should you have any questions or concerns, please email me. You can set up an appointment with me at www.kumonfs.genbook.com, and if you can't find a convenient time you can email me and we can set a time that works for both of us.
